Besides that; we were told with the hyacinths to keep them a bit longer they should be kept in a dark place at a cool temp out of water...at least thats what our dutchman said.

i was told this about amaryllis and daffs and something else, can't remember. but, how long can you do that before they go over and they are dying. and also. if you take away it's water does it give a shorter shelf life after you have given it water?
