Recently the carnation has been looked down upon as a "grandma" flower but I think this is just our attitudes rubbing off on the customer. When "modern" arrangements and and modern flowers like Oriental Liliums started coming in 15 or so years ago florists went off the old carns n gyp posies and eventually the customers (younger ones at least) have picked up on that. But now, like some of the others who have posted here, we are seeing what a great flower it is - huge colour variety, long stem, v long vase life. It is up to us to educate the customer about these benefits and to use the humble carnation in a more modern setting (as others have suggested). Here we have trouble selling chrysanths too (customers think they are just cheap daisies that won't last!) but with these and the carns I have been suggesting them to customers whenever I can - pointing out that they last well and are very good value. It is starting to work, I have a few regulars that will now buy them.
