Well.. What would you like to know exactly..?? - ask away!!

It's a bit hard to exactly pinpoint the differences when being an Aussie florist is all I know.. but after reading the posts on this board I can tell you about a few differences that I think there is... Oh, by the way, once I start talking I don't stop.. I am quite opiniated ( or so my husband says) so just tell me to shut up when you've had enough...

1 - Well, it seems that in the UK and the USA for that matter, there is a lot more of a focas on Funeral flowers. It appears that you seem to do a lot more tributes ( wreath, names etc) - We just don't do that here... Wreaths occasionally, names etc - never... the first personalised tribute I did was in college, that was also my last. Most sympathy flowers go to the Family home. I think the funeral directors instigated that early on mostly so they don't have to handle them. A lot of funeral homes have their own florist on staff to make the casket sprays or only a handful of florists have a contract to supply these. Most funerals are a " no flowers by request" service.

2 - It also seems that with Weddings, not many have floral centrepieces. Wedding orders are mainly for the bouquets etc, with table centrpieces being not as important, only those with more of a budget opt for them. I do quite a lot of Wedding work and it seems only one in 3 - 4 Weddings have floral table centrpieces. When I first started, church flowers were also a pre- requsite - every Wedding ordered them, now, that has also declined. Specialised Wedding decorators are very popular and they offer more hire style items for table decorations. I am lucky that I have a few Decorators use me when Fresh flowers are required.

3 - You would definatly have more flower varieties available. Popular flowers here are, Gerberas, Oriental and tiger lilies, Orchids, Beautiful range of natives, tropical style flowers etc.. We do have to be careful in what we use as the weather is not kind to some varieties. It does amaze me however, that after reading a couple of posts that you all find gerberas to not last well - I find they last about 5 - 7 days and that is fairly standard and you guys seem to hate Gerberas and lillies in Wedding work. At the moment every 2nd wedding is with oriental lilies and they are so easy to work with( apart from the fact you need to get them open, But I have this down pat)

By the way.. Didn't go to uni ( being a florist and all) so I can't help you there, but my brother studies at the Sunshine coast Uni, about one and half hours drive from here . he still sounds fine??!! - Brissie is a great city, very relaxed, friendly, great weather ( as long as you love the heat - It can get very HUMID here) so I am sure she will be fine... which uni does she want to attend??

I am new to the boards so I am not sure where you live Pull MY Finger!! but I live in the states and I do a lot of Gerber dasiys and lillys. I also do a lot of table pc's to but mine there is not a lot of design to them. I do a lot of rentals of glass, mirrors, candles ect. with the economy the way it is where I live I had to find something in a price range where they will still spend it. I would love to do fresh flowers on the tables but they will not put the money into it. So I make it off the rentals, win win for me.. I have very little damage and every thing makes it back to me..I may use bear grass and float a flower. But they really like the candles and cylinders.
Not sure why the trend has changed so much! I do know where I am from outdoor weddings are VERY big in gardens, so people don't order as much for outside. I got in to arch and gazebo rentalstoo. got to offer other things if they won't buy flowers. sometimes they end up spending more..~Tracy
