I'm sure there are stats actually, I've read articles which mention how big the UK retail flower market is, tho there are possibly not stats on the home worker side, not sure how much of that sort of work gets declared, but definately on the supermarket/independant florist side.

tree.. you said above that you hope to be getting work experience by your friend who is opening up a shop.

when we employ new people we make sure not to employ anyone who is thinking of opening their own place as they can take our clients and contacts away with them....

so i presume you have told her that you are doing this as experience for when you open your own place.

Yes AD - she knows my plans in full. She's about 3 suburbs away from where I live - and I won't be opening for at least a year and it won't be near where she is anyway. I've identified 2 x areas near to me (in the other direction) where I reckon there's an opportunity for a florist to make a living - but who knows what the situation would be in a years time. One's an area in London that's going through a bit of a regeneration - lots of new builds, restaurants, boutiquey shops - but no florist. The other is nearer to me which is near a crem and is quite residential - again no florist.

In my experience I tend to find its the homeworkers who call themselves florists and havent had enough real life shop experience are actually damaging the floristry business because they dont know what theyre really doing.

Hi Rosa, I meant stats on the homeworkers - agree there's bound to be a fair few that don't declare - am sure there are reports (Mintel etc) that you can buy for the UK market

If they're turning our professionally finished, creative work and its a means to an end (ie when they get their shop) then don't see the problem. Agree its the one's with no experience in real life that are doing damage - but mainly to their own reputations if that's what they're trying to build up. Personally, I wouldn't take on something I couldn't deliver in a professional manner. Like you said before, I may feel differently when I am in your position but until then am going to strive to achieve to be the best I can through training, experience and building my knowlege

Good god wind your necks in the pair of you. If you dont like to hear other peoples opinions you shouldnt be on a forum site. Life isnt all honeypots and rainbows, we are all entitled to have our say.

If you read her first post Potty, she said 'im looking for some advice on starting my own private floristry' and then went on to say 'now i would like to work from home privately'
