Florist News

Hi, probably a bit of an odd one out on here as I have no experience of floristry at all and I'm a bloke! (Any others out there??)

Been working in computers for the past 8 years and had basically had enough so looking at a career change. My father runs a market garden, its been in the family for generations and as a kid I grew up surrounded by dahlias, crysants, sweet williams and the like. We sell to loads of florist and general flower shops and stalls around the Blackpool area. I'm looking into opening a flower shop whilst studing floristry at Mysercough college though just missed the course for this year :-(

Anyway, I digress, just basically come on here to try and get an insight into the world you guys live and try and get a few ideas. Master plan is to both grow flowers myself and sell via a shop along with contract work for hotels, including plants and containers.

Welcome, and yes there are a few blokes in here, me for one, this forum def. gives u an insight into our world. Funny that, I used to teach IT many many moons ago (only to Nvq level though) then the missus pleaded with me to help her out (that was 15 yrs ago) and "here I am", .....

LOL. yeah, admit I've not much of a concept of the florstry world and hence I'm on here. Yeah, quite a few ideas at the mo, most come about purely because I'm in the position where I could use my dad's existing business as a dedicated supplier, cutting prices to below market prices and have fresher flowers! I have a vase of blooms in my house at the mo whihc are still good after 2 weeks, he sells these localls for 25p a piece and only lets 4 grow per plant so they are much bigger than you get from other places. Just seems like a logical move for me.......though it may all end in tears. We'll see, just barinstorming kinda thing at the mo. Thanks for the welcome.
