I am new to this site, thought would introduce myself. Been a florist for 18 years and about to open my own business. Not sure if now is a good time how are things at moment?

We opened last August. Things are quite tough at the moment generally but we've been pleased with how the business has gone so far, but I won't say that we're not worried about how things are going to go because we're not in an affluent area to begin with. I think it's just going to take extra drive and determination to get out there and get the business in.

Any tips for starting up ! Need all the advice I can get. Do you use a relay company ? How did u get things going. I am a bit worried in current times, but am comitted to hard work, love flowers with a passion so going to go for it

Like Gemma we have only been open 7 months and things have been quite tough. Being in the South Wales Valleys money is a bit tight. We have three other florists in the town but have not found them much of a threat. Prices have gone up phenomenally since we opened so my advice to you is to diversify within your shop - we sell gifts (not just the usual vases but actually gifts). My daughter (Candylottie) has recently qualified as a balloon artist so we now can offer that service for all occasions.

Similar to Lilylady, we also sell gifts, and we've got lots of other things planned, because we can't rely on people walking through the door. We're going on a balloon training course next month so that we can do balloon decorating ( we already sell balloons) we're getting corporate contracts, funeral director contracts (only one at the moment but we're working on it)
We haven't got relay - if you are thinking of that read the posts in the relay forum thoroughly because it's been a real eye opener to me. We are considering florist2florist as they seem to have the best reputation, although a low volume of orders at the moment. We are also going to sign up to direct2florist website as soon as I get around to it.

Go with what yr heart tells you. I was the same, scared, but passionate about flowers. Opened 4 yrs ago, and its going from strenght to strengt. Ok, we have our quiet time sure, but thats business...
