Question pomanders

I've just uploaded one of the pomanders i've made onto the gallery, I hate making them. When a bride asks for them I always try to talk them out of having them mostly I get my own way but sometimes.....!
They are so fiddly and I never know how to hold them when putting the flowers in- its so difficult not to bruise the petals. I usually make the bottom and then hang it off something then try to work around the rest of it as it spins round like a bloody disco ball.
But what mechanics does everyone use to make it?- oasis foam, moss ball, wired flowers, glued flowers what is the prefered way to make them with you lot?!
I'm asking this as every month in many bridal magazines they're always saying stuff like.."Be different, go for an unusual pomander to really make a statement" blah blah. Does any florist actually enjoy making these things?

Yes Jo I do enjoy making them now. I cover wet oasis ball with wire and cover with hebe or box then flowers don't need as many flowers when covered with folige had bad experience good few years back 2 little tomboys played football with theirs and they split in two halves and this was before they even got into the church hence chicken wire or similar to cover gives added strength and with foliage easier to add flowers without bruising Nice pics

I still hate pommanders!

Never thought of using chickenwire, good idea. So many mags have got pics of all rose pomanders now though. Wish they weren't such a pain to make! how much do you charge for them, mine start at £45 for bridesmaids ones because I hate making them so much and if people are willing to pay that than i'll do it. (The one in the picture was £49.00)

It does take time to make them and yes I see a lot of all rose poms think if I had one to do I would use cold clue as well for added security would have to see how many roses then do costing and would depend on size as well smallest ball may be big enough if using all roses this is the size I use anyway and then determine size with length of foliage

Sorry I ask,but what do you use these pomanders for ,is it instead of a bouquet. Or for the bridesmaid only? I dont think I ever seen it used in dk.
We also don't have grownups for bridesmaid. Not often any way.

hi nepanthes, we use them mostly for younger bridesmaids but now it is becoming more fashionable for brides to carry them instead of a bouquet. I think brides look silly with them though!

At collage the other week we made flower balls with wire trails. the ball was to sit in the brides hand and the trails to fall downwards - personaly I thought they were rather clumsy to hold

Thanks Jo, Well today anything can be done and ther's a lot of fantastic designs. And then " a ball".I do think it looks nice but there is so many more exiting ways to make a wedding bouquet. But what we as florists and proffs think about great floral designing is not always the same as our costumers think. And in the end we all do what the customer want's.

I have seen a bouqet made from a green apple. It looked so fine and nice but I did think that it must have been uneasy to hold.

Yes I noticed the last couple of shows we were at there were a lot of these type of bridal balls and some of them were a little heavy so I think they would not be comfortable to hold for to long
