we use the holders but wire the flowers into it ie wire comes thru back/top of holder and twist two wires together around bits of the cage - so the end of the stem is in water but it is anchored to the cage.
Hope that makes sense.

ditto, i do them like that and i like the oval shaped holder, cant remember if its val spicer that does it, find they've got less cage and more room for the flowers

Always used Stemtack 2000 on the holders and never had any problems with stems falling out, even with a test shake. Occasionally would wire in some of the heavier/longer stems just to be sure
