I do a lot of weddings using crystals - what I do is use bullion wire to make a crystal on a stem then VERY GENTLY feed it through the middle of the rose leaving it just ever so slightly proud of the petals - have never yet (touch wood) had a problem wth browning or wilting as you are actually putting the pin into the hard centre of the petals, not those which create the design of the open rose (I hope that makes sense). Best idea I can think of in your case is take a bunch of cheap roses (those bunches in a bucket) and have a play until you are confident with the skill.

That way you won't be using expensive roses to practice on but will get the gist of what you are doing. I find the larger crystals work best as the smaller ones tend to get lost a bit.

Hope this helps.
