No they are not all shurkers pink, i used to work as a floristry lecturer so i have see it first hand. i know the types who pick the best stuff and dont help
May be colleges should have a system where you order your own flowers from a buying list and condition your own flowers......... our students had to use the same flowers for their designs all week so getting the most out of the flowers thus learning to handle them and condition them mid week as well. our demos would help them to utilise their flowers by design eg tied designs, arr, posy, wired wedding work so by the end of it all if they had been rough with them it would reflect in their grades, helping them to understand the importance of well groomed flowers. in turn all this helps students when they get a job in a florist. we all learn from experiance, i know in my shop we ALL do everything and this is cos of my experiances of working for other people who deligated who did what ![]() |

we had fresh stuff delivered every monday for all the groups to use even the evening classes ~ we ~ as in the group I was in stood and conditioned all the stock and put it in allocations for each group
To make sure we knew all the basics we had assessments on the conditioning and rotation of stock etc etc.... not just we sat and wrote it all down we had to do practical assessments as in we showed and talked through what we were doing ~ and kept doing it till we got a pass Some of the idle ones did not even turn up for that ~ and these silly cows paid for the course

On a lighter note, I know of one 'florist' who invested thousands into a shop, cos "its not rocket science you know" and gave a friend of mine the gift of a hanging basket which she said had taken two hours to make, and it had five bedding plants in it!!
Stangely enough, she is no longer trading!! ![]() |

i think that as with lots of other employment you have to keep up with current trends and college can help with that but....lots of people do have a certain gift for floristry and produce some fab designs without the need to go to college, myself i prefer to have some kind of certificate behind me just to prove my worth.i wouldnt want to go to say a doctor or chiropractor or acountant with out any qualifications (maybe slightly different than a florist but ya get my drift)
anyway.... as with every proffesion there are good and bad in all,its just that the bad make us who are good look like we are all bad ![]() the worst of all are the flower arrangers who firmly believe that they are more than capable of doing a florists job and love to tell you all about it. as for bucket washing etc i have always had a rule that everyone does everything be it bog cleaning, making tea or anything that needs to be done. in the shop wgere i work we all wash t cups, buckets etc but only the trained make up orders, but if your crap you dont get to do it again until youve had in shop training as to how things are expected to be done and we certainly would not send anything out that looks crap |

Im a qualified florist and done my course with my sister in law, She passed with Distinctions i passed with a credit on my final exam. I now have my own shop and have been working in floristry for 3 yrs, she is now unemployed after working in a BANK for 3 yrs, she never worked in a shop after leaving college.
It upsets me to think that she walks around claiming to be a florist because she has her qualification. She will attempt to make a funeral item every now and again but i will not have any association with it because its usually pretty awful. Just thought i'd have that little rant!! Apologies... ![]() Good Luck Steven, i hope all goes well for your shop. |
