Employing children

Ha ha, I'm so desperate for staff I've been hanging around outside the school gate and have caught a child who wants to work on Saturdays. She will be 15 soon, but have been looking on t'internet and it says if they are under 16 I have to get a permit from the local education authority. Anyone know anything about/have any experience with this? She wants to be a florist so I'm quite keen, but not too hot on the old beaurocracy/paperwork side of things .

I love this site- phew thanks rosa for posting this question, I wouldn't have thought I needed to inform anyone, I'm about to have a 15year old here over the summer holidays and have just phoned to check with my local council and Yes we need to get a permit signed by her parents and the social department. It takes about a week to get the forms back and then she can start straight away. They said they have an information pack for me regarding breaks and hours of permitted work. Going to call on my way home for the PACK! Spent til 2am reading harry potter last night, guess I'll be reading again tonight!
Wow, being an employer is pants eh?!

Hehehe, no I've no children, only cats, but if I did I'm sure I would be.

Will ring the LEA, looking forward to trawling through their information PACK, why does everything have to be so blinking beaurcratic, it's not like I'm trying to send her up chimneys or crawl inside the mechanics of fast moving machinery to clean it, is it?

What do you pay a 15 yr old? Love the idea of cheap labour but can't be doing with inane chatter all day.

They fall outside the minimum wage legislation so you can pay them what you like apparently hehehe. Will probably offer whatever 16 yr olds get, don't want to take advantage of the poor lamb. We had a girl in the school hols last & this summer, she's brilliant, really pleasant girl, hard worker, bright, makes all the buttonholes and corsages now, no inane chatter from her maybe cos everyone else is old enough to be her mum or gran, haha. Total contrast from the kids who wander in who have obviously been sent in by their mums and can barely grunt 'gotanyjobs' at us!

My son ,,who is now 17,,I know I know..I don't look old enough...has been my saturday boy since he was 14,,,he does all the serving and fone answering and bucket scrubbing and stripping down,,he takes orders and tidies up,,he's very good boy,,he's 6ft 3",,blonde blue eyed ,,maths and physics genius,,NO BLOODY COMMON SENSE!! once asked me where the great wall of china was!!!! Anybody got a nice 17 yr old daughter,,its high time he had his first love!! I keep trying to fix him up! I think about £3.50 an hour is fair for a 14-15yr old,,I don't think they are allowed to handle heavy objects or things like bleach,,but if they are family it doesn't apply!! HA HA HA HA,,, I make my kids work hard in my shop!!! I've had teenagers before on work experience etc,,they mostly drove me crazy so I don't bother anymore. I'm not very tolerant really,,I can shout at my kids but not at anybody elses' or they'd go home crying and I'd get sued for bullying!! Am not looking forward to next year though when my son goes to uni and my daughter thinks she's having his job,,,oh my goodness there would be fireworks cos she a totally different character,,hates hard work!! Just thought,,,not long after my daughter turned 13 last year she came home from school with a permission slip to work a few hours a week,,don't know where that came from but it was just automatically issued to her at that time.
