my first shop

im no longer a virgin (i m talking about the owning of a shop) i have always managed other peoples shops so i took the plunge when i saw a shop for sale that was a bit run down but not enough that it was not viable. ive spent most of my time when its closed painting it from pillar box red to a clean fresh white everythings going fine but every now and then in the quite five moments of the dayi start feeling sick thinking what the heck have i done no ones going to use me all the regualr customers might hate me and go some where else im not sure how to advertise the shop whith out looking tacky the windows like an oven and now my minds gone blank and cant think of any cool funky window dislpays when i used to work for someone else they just rolled out oh well ill keep my nose to the stone and keep plugging away at it i just wondered if anyone else ever felt like this or had any inspiring ideas to motivate me

Hello Louisa, I've had my shop 3 years and I still wonder on a daily basis was I INSANE haha!!!! I'm going in later to catch up on admin . We are lucky with our windows as we are on the shady side of the street and the windows are also recessed from the pavement. We don't do special window displays, they are set out as part of the main interior shop displays with plants and pots etc. We used to have a workbench in one window, that caught people's eye and it saves the headache of thinking about what to put in it each week. On the losing customer front, yes you will lose some, but you will also gain some too .

Hi Louisa, although I can't give you practical advice, I just wanted to say well done for taking the plunge in getting your own shop. Its my dream to do that one day and your feelings of doubt are only natural and am sure you'll make a success of it because you know the pitfalls and can work round them. All the best

I know the feeling - suddenly its all on you - my first "outside" shop (I have been working at home for years) opens Wednesday and I feel physically sick. My head tells me it will work - I have done all the legwork and paper trails etc but even so.....

Just hang on in there and it will come right

Get used to the panic attacks! My shops been open 5 months and I started from scratch. You do have moments of absolute terror but then you also have moments of great achievement. I think the answer is stay positive cos if your not theres no point in even being there. Its all worth it in the end I promise! I set out with a daily target just to pay the bills and its funny how 5 mths later I'm hugely disappointed if I take that figure!
