We've had a few brides in to ask about British grown or low airmiles/carbon footprint flowers. This stuff is not going to go away. So will the growers please come forward and show us what you've got!

Was in Waitrose yesterday, I'd say over half their single flower bunches were UK grown, sunflowers, lissy, lilies, xanth.

There are growers near where I live, who supply the supermarkets, they just aren't interested in supplying to me, the volume is too low, and the time and travelling for me to go fetch the flowers just isn't worth it. It's not black and white, carbon footprint argument. And from a global economy point of view, you have to weigh up the benefit to providing employment for people in developing countries who grow these flowers too.

That's quite interesting what you're saying about the suppliers not wanting to suppy you due to smaller quantities.

Much as I enjoyed the programme, I felt she was being a little harsh on florists and hadn't taken into account things like what you are saying rosa.

I also disgreed with her comment that florists are after the same size this, same size that - surely that's the whole point of flowers that every stem is different and that's what makes flowers so fab.

I agree, Rosa. Countries like Ecuador and Kenya need the economic income from growing and exporting flowers and since they have the climate, why not. It's just that 'carbon footprint' seems to be the latest bandwagon for everyone to jump on and say they want 'local' produce (while planning their next weekend jaunt to Barcelona on a £30 flight
