Thieves about?

I'm sure none of us really need reminding but it seems to get worse this time of year. A shop two doors away was done this morning. Two girls walk in and one distracts the assistant, wants to see something at the back of the shop. Meanwhile the other one helps herself to £160 out of the till. bye, bye.

last week had a young bloke in for a single rose, in a hurry of course, but wants the water thingy and a bit of ribbon, just to get you busy. then hands over the £20 note. Of course it looks and feels like monopoly money, but just to be sure i walk next door to the woolwich who confirm just that. I fully expected him to have legged it when i returned, but no "i've just got it from the betting shop, it must be ok!".
Remember to mark it, tear it, write "dud" or something on it before handing it back.
Really should get all staff to iniytial every £20 before it goes in the till, just to be conscious of looking at them properly.

apart from it's illegal to deface currency. We have a little keyring attached to the till that shines a uv light when you press it.

You are correct of course. It is a criminal offence to deface the Queen's currency. However it is not an offence to deface pieces of paper that pretend to be the Queen's currency, which is what i was suggesting. The point is to prevent another trader being duped with the same note. The felt pens are good as well, they show black on a dud note, but leave no mark on a 'good' note.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always led to believe that if you rubbed a note on a piece of white paper, the colour of the note comes off if it's good, if it's a dud, it won't come off

You'll love this one from last year.
Young woman comes into shop and after browsing for a while buys a small designer bag for 1.99 and pays with £20 note. When she has left, young girl on till says to me "I think i did the change wrong and only gave her £17.01" I'm thinking, this is not good, we don't rip people off, take a pound out of the till and see if you can find her and give her the pound. After a few minutes she comes back, can't see her anywhere. Next minute, one of the other traders comes in and says "watch out for a girl passing dud twenties" Panic starts to set in and i look at the note in the till. This is a good one, feels about right, looks about right, but something says it's not real. So off we go trying to find her, along with 3 other traders who look as worried as me. As luck would have it, one of us found her up the hill and detained her. I rushed up there, gave her my Clint Eastwood "make my day" look and managed to get my change out of her. Just at that minute a police car is driving past, which we flagged down. She was arrested and eventually did time for it. She had managed to pass off 6 of those notes in our row of shops, which goes to show how easy it was and how good the quality was.

As well as the constant threat from forgeries, this time of year is bad for break ins as criminals do their Christmas shopping in their own way.

Someone was disturbed in the early hours of last Saturday night trying to get in through the roof of the video shop next to us. They had tried ours too, but failed.

Just because it's a florist doesn't mean these toerags won't have a go at getting in - check your security. Skylights are a favourite.
