Placement assessments

New one on me-anyone had this before? Two students came to ask if they could do placements, I said thank you very much when can you start. They have both done one day but now their tutor wants to assess me. Never had the florists I did placements with assessed so I am wondering if it is because my shop is new - do I need to show certificates, or whats it all about? Any information would be appreciated, no doubt the tutor would tell me but to be honest I don't feel like showing my ignorance. Maybe my placements in college weren't really placements! Maybe I am not really a florist! Maybe I should just stay in bed. I just wanted to help a student and now I am freaking that I will have to have my work assessed

Cheer up, of course you are a florist I cant really answer your question as the student thing is different in Denmark. Students has to go to trade college 2 years ,then 2 years in a flower shop.. But the shop has to be approved, that means, i think ,that there has to be a trained florist in the shop. It often of course is the owner. Maybe its just a teacher with a conscience who wants to make sure the student actually learn something

At our colleges no one assesses the florist, us student just fill a form in and get the florist to sign and give details of their insurance etc. Blimey it's hard enough getting student places without the colleges giving the florists agg, anyway it's not for you to teach them, that's what the college is for, they should be with you for the experience.

It sounds like they did work experience and then the college want to check you out. I had said I'd take one on and when the college visited and started asking bloody stupid questions I told her to stick it (not big or clever but was one of those days!) I've also got a P/ter whos at college and the tutor came in and checked out my insurance etc. Is this what you mean Abi?

I have a work experiencer one day a week. The college came out to see me to check my insurance certifcate and just to touch base really with what I was supposed to be doing with her. Also, probably to check the shop actually exisited and the student wasn't just skiving off a day a week and getting her mate to sign off her paperwork! There were a couple of forms to complete too, just health and safety stuff.

I'd have thought they mean assessing the workplace rather than you.

Ours just checked our insurance, our health & safety policy and our facilities as in toilets etc.

lol. I know the feeling; I had a work experience girl for a local comprehensive school. Before she could come for her placement the person in charge of work experience for the local education authority had to come and check me out. she had to see that the shop was ok, and that I was registered (no not with the local loony bin) .I had to fill in forms and send a copy of my insurance certificate which had to be sent to her before the work experience girl could come. I had to show that I was going to do health and safety with her and had to show my first aid box etc. Now they will send me work experience children on a regular basis. And I am glad the checks were thorough as it shows that the placement is not being taken lightly.
