I think its a fairly good rate,,I can remember when I started as trainee I got paid £3.00 an hour!! And I had given up a £20k a year job,,I must have been really really crazy,,but would not change a thing cos at least I'm happy (ish)!

My lovely husband/accountant told me that the extra I have to pay out in total will cost me another 3k a year,,that coupled with the increase in hol entitlements and my recent rent increase will take it up to about £8000 a year more I have to shell out,,,that does make me wonder why I do it,,happy or not. That means I have to sell a lot more of everything to recoup some of that,,and should I expect more from my girls to help me do that??? I think probably yes,,why shouldn't they try and sell £30 bqs instead of £25,,and chocs with everything,,or a balloon,,or a vase..anything!! If you are given a payrise aren't you usually expected to put in a little more effort to show you are worth it?? Or do we and our staff work hard enough already??

Its not that they are not worth it,,they are,,its not that I begrudge it,,I don't really,,but where will it all stop?? In 3 years it could well be at the £6 mark and that means that your qualified experienced staff will be above that,,generally,,, I find that very worrying, it will keep going up and up every year and can we increase our sales and income to match it??

Good points Lexy, esp about the inflation effect on the more experienced staff's wages. Holidays are a big enough pain in the arse as it is, fitting them in around the peaks and the weddings, negotiating with the other staff to do extra days to cover, and of course having to pay them as well as the one that's off sunning themself, without them getting a load more days at our expense. I dream of holiday...... it is but a distant memory .

How do you get them to upsell/sell add ons, mine are all stubborn as mules and deaf to my cajoling and encouragement to do this .

We made a chart put all of our names down and each time you had a sale £40 or over was marked on chart at end of month the person with the highest sales got a gift voucher for beautician or hairdresser to the value of £40 it worked because everyone worked dam hard to get the voucher

So more costs to be added for us owners by the government
Wow I am so excited £5.52...................if I ever earn enough to pay myself I am going to be loaded. £5.52, 8 hour day(at least), seven days a week .... I'll be a rich woman ..............I can't wait!

well thats the whole point really Rosa,,I can't get them to upsell!! I keep going on and on,,they know how stressed I get at rent time,,nearly slit my throat last week when I had to sign the flamin cheque!! They don't really care,,they work hard... they get paid,,now they going to get paid more. We do work hard constantly in my shop,,same as most others I should think,,but I do get extremely cross about my overheads..I'm a mardy cow at times !! And then I've just had to pay my share of the recent shopping precinct renovations as well,,that was another £2200,,and because I fought the rent increase that was heaped upon me earlier this year and it took 6 months to come to an agreement it got backdated and I had to pay a quarters rent plus the backdated amount of increased rent,,,so forgive me for feeling a trifle p'd off!! It sometimes feels too much to cope with but then I pick myself up and resolve not to let the b******s get me down.

I tend to do most of the selling to be honest,,mainly because I have the bills to pay and I know what is coming in and going out..I know how much I need to sell to break even or make a profit,,so it obviously gives me an incentive,,it drives me,,I push myself to do the cheeky florist sales thing when I really just want to go home and lie down in a dark room and scream. I have a shop full of add ons for sale,,,why the shagging hell can't anybody try and shift some of it. Its an owner thing,,thats all there is to it,,I've had staff meetings and competitions and everything to encourage selling but nothing seems to work. I think I'm gonna change my will and leave my shop to 2 of my girls,,then they will bloody well know how it feels to try and make things balance and keep your staff happy as well!!

If you want it selling,,sell it yourself!! Simple as that.

Rant over,,sorry.
