Best way to find a florist?
I really really need more help in the shop especially with christmas coming.I just can't keep on top of it all,the window hasn't been changed in ages,i have badly hurt my neck(seeing oesteopath tomorrow)because i've been doing too much trying to cope with the business, bring up two children on my own and look after the four dogs.
I really would like someone experienced already, have put a sign up in the shop window and also will put an advert online with the job centre.Do you think its worth ringing a local college that does floristry courses to see if anyones interested? My shop is in a fairly small town where experienced florists are few and far between and i only really need part time as i have one part timer already but she doesn't want do to any more hours ![]() Any ideas gratefully received guys. Ali, when I was training I went into a florist shop to help (and learn) just for the experience. She got a free helper and I leant so much from her that I count is almost as valuable as my college training. I moved onto paid employment once trained (needed the dosh) but we are still friends and I count myself very lucky to have trained with someone so tallented.
Admittedly the students may not be willing to help free of charge at Christmas time, but I think it is still worth talking to the college, especially about the 2nd year students. I was really pleased to be putting my training into practise and the cleaning of buckets and sweeping of floors was all part and parcel of the training which I didn't mind at all. I'd give it a go if I was you, and I hope you get some relief tomorrow from your neck pain. It's no fun so near to Christmas. Let me know how you get on. All the best.

Hi Ali, I agree with Rainbow that the college route could be good for you. To get real life experience would be fantastic and if you get someone in their 2nd year they will have enough competence to actually be of some value to you at such a busy time as well as not being precious about having to do the mundane stuff like sweeping etc. Good luck, let us know how you get on

hi ali I found those stick on thermal heat packs brill for use at work on a bad neck/shoulder. They are a bit pricey but if you don;t want to use pain killers or they don't work its worth it.
The tutor at my local college said recently that as part of the course they are all doing now every student has to have at least 40 hours shop work so they always have willing volunteers, which is good and you never know you might get one that's so good you want to offer a job to, when they've finished the course ![]()

Hi Ali if you end up taking on someone on the payroll you may be better getting a couple of part-timers working (I think) under 16 hours a week then you don't have to worry about tax etc. Don't know all the details but sure there must be somewhere you can find out. Think Solly might know.

I've already got one part timer so am looking for another. My neck is murder today!!!Been to the oesteopath who did lots of manipulation but its really bad now
Am trying to keep off the pc as much as i can as that really hurts. Its taking me 5 times as long to do anything today. The oesteopath was saying it is my bodies way of telling me to slow down as i had a really bad foot in May of this year as well which kept me off work for two weeks, was awful.Ali xx |
