Valentine rose prices.

There is a bit of a thread going about Valentine rose prices, but I thought it might be worth starting an official thread to maybe help poster see some light at the end of the tunnel.

As some know, I work on the Dutch auctions (same as Aspirin) and this year is probably going to be one of the most interesting with regards to the price.

Last year, prices got so out of hand the closer to Valentines it got, Passion 70cm acheived almost 2.00 pounnds on the clocks !! Grand prix 50cm (auctioned as being too ripe) made about 1.15. This has lead to growers asking over the top prices for their crops.

I have been unable to get any fixed quotes from growers for the first time in 20 years.

I expect to sell around 150,000 red roses this year, and the price my clients will be asking will be 1.45/1.55 for a 70cm passion & about 1.25 for a 60cm.

Anybody with any other feedback ?

Its the same for me, no ones giving prices yet, would be interesting to see what you florists have been offered already.

Last year there was lots of excuses why the roses were so expensive, shortage from South America was the biggest one and heavy rain in Kenya or something like that.

We will see, I'm sure the Dutch growers have thought about this and are ready to flood the market so we can all get a decent price red rose this year.

Oh and Interfloras 12 red roses in a vase for 39.99 sounds a good deal

trust me, the market wont be flooded this year.

The bigggest problem is that florists dont want import roses to sell as best quality, and the Dutch production doesnt cover the demand required nowadays. Look at my company. In a normal week we sell about 15,000 red roses. Valentines week in excess of 200,000.

What does rattle my cage is when a florists says to her wholesaler " I cant pay 1.50 for a red rose ! I'm only selling them for 3.00 each. " WTF !!

I know exactly what you are saying mate, but take this story for example.

Last year afew days after Valentines I spoke to my uncle, and said did he get my aunty some nice roses for valentines, he said ''I made a mistake and bought them from tescos and they cost 9.99 for 12, but in sainsburys they were only 4.99''

This is getting more and more common for normal people to buy there flowers from these places, so it is hard for a florist at the moment.

You, I and the florist knows that they sell alot better quality rose than the supermarkets, but to sell them 6,7,10x more is hard to do.

If I was a florist id be complaining aswell!

Last year we sold around 60,000 stems to England, mostly Passion 60cm and our price was 95p hopefully this year the price will be about the same, but would be nice to see what quotes other florists get.

If interflora and fellow companies keep the price below 50.00 pounds, i'm sure they will do good business, but last year most people where talking 65.00 plus delivery, plus card, plus this & that. 85.00 pounds, thank you very much.
You can get away with being greedy for a couple of years, but it will come back to bite you in the long run.

Morning Gringo,
Prices are:- passion 80cm 1.35, g/prix 1.75, b/bac 1.75, torero 1.25, el torro 1.25, calypso .65 & .75. Just noticed if I order before 31 Jan I get an extra 5% discount, do you think they are off the back of a lorry?! His quality is usually good but I have to watch him at busy times cos he has a habit of slipping in extra wraps!!

Have a good one,

Breezy
