When to open a shop
Am not busy at work at the moment, so mentally started to put together a timeline for opening a shop with key milestones e.g. finishing college, getting shop experience etc etc.
Anyway, got me thinking about when's the best time of year to open and ask you guys : What month did you open your shop? If you did it again, would you choose a different time?

We did it a little late in the year "October" which left us quite a bit confused when xmas came around (didnt have enough time to get some idea of what to expect), I would prob go for about a month after mothers day, when flower prices are a little lower, giving u a chance to build up the bank balance prior to the lull b4 xmas (as u can see by other posts on the forum, it gets a bit quiet around this time which can be a little disheartening)... im sure some peeps will have diff. views on it though, whats good for one (ME
) isnt good for everyone.

same as poodledoodle, took over mine in November.
If I did it again - in an ideal world I'd want to open for business in January having had the Christmas period to make any changes to shop displays, do any painting etc and then would have a few weeks to get ready for Valentines and Mothers Day. At least that way, you've got the money coming in from the peaks to give your cashflow a good starting point. |

I opened almost two months ago exactly, and personally I feel like this was the perfect time for me to open. I'd been planning the 'perfect time' too, but when it actually starts to happen, you dont really get a chance to time it, it just happens.
I feel like this was a good time of me to open because its allowed me to get settled, get to know what people like and get used to buying etc before the madness of christmas (fingers crossed). When I finished college I worked at a shop for about a year and a half part time and I also did lots of work from home for friends and family mainly. It wasn't until I started working at the shop that I realised how little I'd learned at college and how much I still had to learn. There are things that college cant teach you! I'm still learning now of course! Sorry, that turned out to be a bit of an essay...'me, me, me'!!! Good luck |
