I have a solution to this problem and it works...got the tip from our dutchman.

Add scented oil like lavendar or cinnamon (considering its xmas) to the water...the flowers soak the scent up with them, and so alliums and cabbages smell semi decent...give it a try!

Oh, I like the smell of alliums, not the stinky oniony stems, but the flowers, they smell like the freshness of early summer to me hehehe.
