Basing letters

Hi

Felt a bit lost yesterday when the site was down for construction, pleased to see its back today- phew!

Has anyone ever based letters in normal chrysanths, not basing?
I have the letters 'A,P,U' (hungarian for Dad) to base in pink chysanths with foliage edge. I cant work out how many stems to allow per letter- any ideas!

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I've based in normal Xanth before, I quite like the effect you either have to be very careful to keep nice and neat in straight lines or very random so you dont get lines then messy bits that look like they shouldn't be there, does that make sense?
I usually get around 3 bunches per letter and an extra one just in case. Hope that helps.

They're not a lot of fun MD. As JM says, you have to get the pattern 'just right' or 'not at all' else it will look crap. With a double flower you can get away with the heads being a bit random. A lot of the single varieties have very weak stems below the flower head so you may not be able to just push them in. On some i've had to push some rose wire through every flower. (pain in the ass!). You really need to let them drink for a few days or even a week to get them well open. The number of stems you'll get through can vary widely depending on the variety and head count/size. Remember that the oasis letters are larger than the naylor frames and will take more flowers anyway.

what about just having a central line in regan xanth with the rest of it done in double,,that way you don't have to worry so much about the pattern of the flower centres. General rule of thumb is 10 stems per letter and 10 stems just in case,,e.g,,for MUM,,40 stems.

can you not just use pink double xanths???
we allow 4 bunches per letter, just in case they are small heads or not many flowers on a stem, then we sell any that are left over. (i would probably get a couple of extra bunches though if you are using normal xanths as they're not a big)

Basing with single?

I know this is a bit of an old thread but I thought this might be useful for anyone else faced with this request. I only did this one in single because the colour was perfect for a West Ham football supporter - it was easier to use the single than spray the double. The amount you need depends alot on the variety you use and what it's like at the time. Like Lexy said if the xanth is reasonably big letters normally take 10 stems each + 10 for luck.
