I had an apprenticeship and 10 yrs of working with a b*+~ch of a boss who taught me the business. I was lucky. She was tough and mean, but I thank god that I was wise enuf to listen to her. This is a tough business. Last yr I opened my own shop after she closed hers for personal reasons and although I love my life, if I had a chance to do it all again I'd rather do freelancing. You don't just stand in a shop all day as an owner and tie bqs and smile pretty for the customers! Theres a LOAD of what I call annoying little hold ups that you have to deal with as a boss. The last time I actually stood in the shop for more than 2 hours and just made arrangements and bqs was last night from 9pm till 11pm when all my staff had gone home to bed and I stayed and worked so the tables were full!
Sex? ..... what? ... clean house?....what?... reading a book?... a paragraph each nite before I fall asleep..(same book since last June)...vacation?...last year in October (went to London for the weekend..of all places!)
Nooooooo...really...I love my job!
so no..don't go half assed and buy a shop just for the fun of it!

I dont often get annoyed, but this kind of thing really annoys me.

I probably dont have half as much experience as everyone else on this site, as I'm only 26, but, I have recently bought my own shop. When I used to say to a brilliant florist I used to work with "when will I be as good and as quick as you", she used to say "when your as old as me, I've been doing this longer then you've been alive!"

It's been a hard hard struggle to get to my ambition and I have worked, trained and saved so hard to get to this point but I know for a fact that I am only half way there with what I still have to learn. Everyday you learn with this job and you cannot go in to it without any experience or training.

I hate it when people say 'Oh, I'm creative I'd love to be a florist' or these people that just buy shops becasue they can afford to and think they can make a quick buck. It is hard hard work!

These people that open shops because 'they are creative' aren't being fair to us, the proffessionals and they are not being fair to customers. What are they going to do if somebody walks in to their shop and asks for something that they dont know how to make. Its going to make them look stupid and perhaps make floristry in general look like a sham.

There are so many things to take in to consideration when opening your own shop or even thinking about becoming a florist, inlcuding some of the smaller things such as ....

The early mornings.
The yukky smelly stuff.
The cold temperatures.
The dressing like a tramp because you have to wear so many layers to keep warm.
The horrible hands and finger nails.
The lack of money.

But having said all that, I love my job!

!
But MD that is where your professionism will shine through, cos if you are Good you will survive, if you are cr*p you will fall by the wayside. That is why quite a few are going out of business, cos nowadays there are more professioanl florists coming through who can shine, so you shouldn't worry. I think we will all still be learning when we retire, there is something new every day...Was Einstein a florist in his previous life ??
