It may be nothing against me but I feel rather annoyed with how people have answered. I never meant anything by asking, it was just a question. I can understand where you are all coming from but I wish I hadn't bothered asking, didn't realise it would cause such a fuss.

But thank you to Fly for at least putting a bit of a laugh into what has turned into in my opinion a negative thread.

My apologise for any upset asking my question has caused.

No please let me apologies i didn't mean it to upset you but when you have a business and you really don't know who is online looking at what you are saying and replying to (i have personally had problems with a rival florist to do with things i have said on here) i and others are a little dubius on answering certain questions
but please you will find college will help you loads of this matter but let me help a little
you have the price of your flowers and then you have the price of materials and then you put on a make-up charge to cover wages rates rent etc... it is a really difficult one as everyone has a different way the college way is mine but that i believe has changed again
I don't know if this helps but its really something to look at in the future after training and you know all the ins and outs of the business also if you get a placement in a shop you will find out straight away how this works
go out and get the experience and you will find most of the answers to your questions

love potty xx

Well said Potty also the percentages would be a lot different from shop to shop depending on the area and the overheads etc it really is a difficult thing to generalize and only when you are actually working in the environment do you understand the need fot the different charges college will give you the basics for your area and also advise any extras which would need to take into account

Please don't take it all the wrong way Moulder. I had no intention of upsetting you. It was a valid and sensible question to ask and something that we all ponder over even after years in the business. Trouble is, there is no easy answer. If it was just a question of selling cut flowers without doing anything with them, that would in itself produce a wide range of pricing structures. When it comes to make up work, it is even more complicated. At the end of the day though, your work will only be worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. So as much as you might spend an hour doing an arrangement, if it is not quite what the customer wants, it won't be worth much at all. On the other hand, if you manage to do something very special and very quickly, it could be worth a premium to the right person.

At this stage, you should be gathering info on prices that are being charged by various shops and online sites. You are lucky enough to have the internet now and you can do all this from home. Let's say you want to gather info on hand ties...copy a few pics off some florist sites, log the prices and then pull them to bits. that is, analyze the content if you can. Try and work out how much flower is involved and what you might pay for it at wholesale level. Ask yourself how long it might take you to reproduce it (you will get quicker as time goes on).

Obviously there's a lot more involved if you want to make a reasonable profit without being so dear you scare people off, but that's probably a good starting point. As i said, there is no easy answer, it just comes down to gut feeling after a while.

Hope that helps
