Hi RD,

If you really want to do it, you can - I did!

I changed careers at 26, & fair enough i did go to college to do my BTEC national diploma, but if you find the right shop to take you on as a work/ex or trainee then a C&G or national certificate course would be ample as you learn more in the shop environment anyway.

I didn't know if i wanted to be a florist when i decided enough was enough with the burger flipping and table waiting, but i found a 3 day taster course at my local college so i could try it first. also there are more and more places offering it as a night class that would fit in around your job.

there are shops that will take you on with no experience or qualifications, but as has been said before, you would be right at the bottom of the food chain.

Anyway, 6 years down the line and i have my own shop (BLOODY hard work ) and a girl that works with me who started her floristry carreer by being sent to a florists on a 'new deal' scheme from the job centre! and she's absolutely fantastic at it

Its interesting that there is a fear/paranoia of trainees bleeding their employers for all the can then buggering off and setting up their own shop, must be pretty gutting.

Personally speaking, owning a shop is so absolutely pie-in-the-sky for me, its not even worth thinking about. I'd be chuffed to bits to just be working as a florist for someone else; owning my own shop isn't really an option I'd consider at all, really. Unless I won the lottery, then I'd leave Surrey behind, disappear off to Cornwall and set one up down there
