I have a colleague that has been in the flowerbuiness for twenty years. she have develep allergi for bulps. When she work with tulips, hyacints, fritelaria ect. she get red all over.
But she control it with speciel globs. And we take notice, that she dont have to much contact with tulips, hyacints and the rest. And this minimize the red bluss. and we cross out fingers, that it dont get worce But many florists are sometimes forced to find another profession, because of allergies. |

Yes if he/she was good probably keep them away from the offenders but with todays modern medicine there is something out there which should help keep it at bay and allow people to work with almost anything about 5 years ago I all of a sudden took allergy to daffodils my hands and face had terrible rash, skin broke all over so just wore latex gloves and got on with it came back every year for 3 years and dissappeared as quickly as it came never had it since and have dumped he gloves

Second thoughts..after reading Rach & Bellis...made me think a bit.
Plus still had about 35 orders to do up for tomorrow so didn't really give it a lot of thought. If this was the only issue then it is something that can be sorted one way or another. It would be a lot worse if someone was 'allergic to customers'. None of us is perfect. We all have problems to deal with but we just get on with it and cope. I can remember years ago we employed a young girl and for ages i kept rewriting things and correcting her spelling and just thought she had missed out on the school thing. After about 6 months she said she was dyslexic. I asked her why she hadn't told me this before and she said she thought i wouldn't have employed her. I told her straight. She had a wonderful personality. She got on really well with the customers, did everything that was asked of her and was an asset to the business regardless of her dyslexia. We could make allowances and keep an eye on the things that were affected but it wasn't the end of the world. Bringing it all closer to home...if i was to say to you girls "I am red/green colour blind...would you give me a job in your florist shop" What would you say? I had to face up to the fact that i could never be a pilot, electrician, plumber, formula 1 driver, train driver and a thousand other occupations where colour is a matter of life and death. Fortunately, colour is not that important in floristry? I manage to cope with it. I can say to a customer "which ribbon would you like". Problem solved. If i get stuck on something, I ask someone. I don't get embarrassed about it. I like to think that i do well enough at lots of other things to more than compensate for one little flaw. So, on reflection..it's the sum of the parts that make up the whole ! |

Lots of things we can cope with and as you say there is a way round different problems one of our students who was educated to a very high standard but couldn't spell we very often spelt Florrie as Flowery and then argued we were wrong she was right we knew the customer also never heard of her spelling we asked if whe would ask customer to either spell or verify spelling but she refused so she came of the shop floor and was banished to the workroom which worked very well until her mother came her like a bull in a china shop acusing us of calling her daughter stupid needless to say she left which was unfortunate as she had her first year at college finished and was a very promising florist some you win some you lose hope you get finished soon fly2hi have a good one everyone

Collorblind. hmm that a tuff one. My boss who tought me, had a problem with red collors. he could not set them appart, this was a secret. But noone ever notice. Not that he could not tell a red rose from a pink. but when someone ordered a bordeaux red, or something like that. there were a little trouble. But then he just asked. |

after being a florist for a number of years, I suddenly developed hayfever, or rhinitus, I was allergic to all the flowers. For ages I sneezed all day long, even at Christmas, one year I had to be given a steriod injection so that I could continue to work, even my eyeballs had blisters on them!!!
Then suddenly, it went, now I have psoriosis. Happy days, people say it's all down to stress. Now that's a new post!! |
