I watched this last night, they had a florist on (simon lycett) and he was just showing a load of his preety arrangements and explaining how to ask for nice things from ypur florust and the best value flowers to go for.
He advised to avoid roses and red altogether if pos, due to how expensive they are. Also he had two guys on that both had ordered gifts from florists, the first asked for a romantic basket with no roses in it...which was the height of ming! a yellowy affair with tonnes of tree fern in it, not the slightest hint of romance about it. The second was a doz roses in a slim black that looked rubbish. Simon said a flower heart would be much nicer and pulled out one he'd made earlier haha. He also advised lots of lovely spring flowers in nice compact arrangements would be better value than red roses.

He is always positive to the trade, don't think he would ever shout down a quality product, just recognises that the seasonal demands of valentines day inflates prices and there are alternatives.
I also own a wholesale plant nursery in nottingham, and when he was doing gardeners world he was the best sales tool we had. If he mentioned a plant on the Friday night we usually had to top our garden centre customers up over that weekend and nearly always sold out of that plant the following week. It not like that now with the current presenters i'm afraid. Mind you how many men are going to be watching him at 3 in the afternoon! |
