Tetanus – H&S gone mad?

Hi all,

At college we've all been told we have to have a regular tetanus jab because florists are prone to contracting it. Rest assured I have done as I was told and been for my booster, but I just wondered if the emphasis the college gives it is more related to their concerns about being sued for not warning us, or if there is a genuinely high risk of contracting it. Do you all keep your tetanus up to date, and do any of you know of a florist in the UK who actually contracted the disease?

Just curious.

P.S just incase you think I am exceedingly sceptical, bare in mind that the college also warned us that scissors are very sharp, and we have had to sign forms to consent to ourselves going on a trip!

Hiya

We were also told that our tetanus had to be up to date. I know I had it in school but can't remember if I've had it since then.

I should check really, I had forgot all about it

We were advised to have a tetanus as well, I think the risk is greater especially when dealing with moss etc as the tetanus bug lives in soil. Why on earth would you have to sign a consent form for yourself, are the college likely to kidnap and take you against your will? Mad Mad Mad

Serious answer now!. I think the last tetanus jab i had was when i was about 17, can't remember what year that was. I'm always getting rose thorns stuck in me, but have only ever had one reaction to it (little tender for a few days) as i didn't get it all out, so had to do some digging, which is difficult for me as i'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to ripping flesh to bits.

True enough Rach, but the possibility is there. Mine isn't working anymore and I am going to have a new .My brother is a doctor and he told me that people die from it, every year. I haven't heard of any florists getting tetanus (stivkrampe in danish) neither , but don't want to be the one. He also told me that it was very important for me in my line of work, so !!!!! I'll do as big brother tells me to
