Ever thought of taking on a locum for busy periods? Just come in when you need them, not permanent staff. Some mums with kids will do this.

Lemons to lemonade!

Had a single cock up - one bouquet (the only timed one if you don't mind - yes I'm soft) went to the wrong address.

Dad came in with mum on the phone, she was miffed to say the least - didn't want another one etc etc. Decided I would refund the money when asked but made up a larger bouquet (only just) in same colours as apology to be delivered tomorrow (they were off out hence the timing). Son who had ordered came in late this aft and was really ok - just wanted the same bq delivering tomorrow. Told him and showed bq I had made as an apology and he was gobsmacked. Said he is going to spread the news I am soooo much nicer than the comp who let him down last year and just said oh, well heres your money back. Can't buy advertising like that for a fiver, can you. He was so pleased he dragged mum in whose bottom lip nearly touched the floor, guess they aren't used to that treatment although I thought it was fairly common

My biggest cock up was not ordering enough as i was making up bq's realised I would be short of flowers, telephoned supplier not open on Sat who said I could go up at 9am to Inverness, set off 7.30am Sunday morning arrived at 8.30, bloke who makes up orders did not arrive till 8.45 he usually arrives at 8.00 Panic. He made up order as I waited I had left message on A/P he was huffin and puffin, not sure if I have enough I have all these orders here (I am not worried about them) He would not let me have any orientals, I think they are all ordered, ok I will get from Tesco (more delays).

I also was picking up a 3 boxes for Amanda and she was meeting me at my shop, thank good ness she did, Manda was an angel in disguise she made up 8/9 bouquets for me while I was doing other bq's and baskets, came with me to co-op run short again. Thanks Manda you were a life saver for me

I had the t..... from VD call in the shop on Sat, I just knew he would come in then grrrrrr, he came in to say the flowers had lasted really well, and the roses had lasted longer than he expected (lucky him) He wanted a £25.00 bq, I had some made up ready for orders, he said can I have that one without the rose, I told him yes but its still £25.00, he then proceeded to tell me that I have the manopoly in this area and he has no where else to go, I told him there is a hardware shop around the corner that sells Chrys and Carnations and there is the door and you are welcome to go thru it(I do not know how I kept so calm) T..... He said can I come back in 10 minutes for a bq the same as that one, I sold him a £20.00 that was made up and he was very pleased with that. Makes me mad, I am a rural florist trying to make a living and you get t.....'. like that coming in on a busy day Its customers like him that keep me going, thankfully not many of them

Thumbs up Jute bags handmade soaps and containers

Hi Everyone,

well glad that MD is out of the way now, and back to normality hopfully. I just wanted to mention thou if anyone has read my other thread about our containers, handmade soaps and jute bags. We make and supply these and we had supplied one particular florist with 60 of our new jute bags and by Sunday morning she has sold the lot. She had had them out side on display in the pouring rain on the Saturday and she rang us up sat evening to say even thou they had got wet they didnt lose shape or colour they were still perfect. So just wanted to say to all you florists shops out there is anyone is interested I will soon be posting some price lists as they come in a range of colours and sizes. We also sold tonnes of the handmade soaps, people were adding them to their flower orders, we just couldnt gift wrap them quick enough they were flying out the door. So my boss was really pleased and overall we had a very very good few days.

My husband went to a flat to deliver, rang the bell, waited for a decent amount of time, no answer, so left. He went and did some more deliveries round the town, and when he passed the flat again, had another go. Still no reply. Think he called in another couple of times (that's dedication from you!!)same result. I was only on the final run back to the shop when he passed again and it was going dusk that he saw a light on upstairs in the flat, thought 'ah-ha, she must be home now...', so he pulled over for one last attempt. He rang, and waited, and because the light was on, gave it an extra minute. he then saw the silhouette of a very, very old lady coming down the staris, one step every 15 secs or so... as he said, God knows how many times the old dear had been down those stairs that day, only to find no-one at the door... gulp! Me and the girls were bad laughing when he told us, though Is that wrong? Puir auld soul!

But, i really need someone elso as well who i can leave when i need a bit of time off who can manage pressuire but worry about taking someone on and then being unable to afford them during the winter months. Has anyone else overcome this problem. I do often get letters from college but i think someone with experience would be better - any advice anyone!!!
employ someone from a college, try them out,we were all there once and who knows you might find a little gem.
i worked for my boss valentines, mothers day, christmas and when his other member of staff was on maternity leave,he didnt take me on straight away so i applied for and got a florists job in a hotel, then he decided to ask me, i preferred retail work and all that it entails so of i went ,he hadnt had a holiday for years or a regular day off,so between me and the other lady ,back from maternity leave, we run the shop for him and he has a day off a week and a holiday!!you never know try it and see wot happens
