Have been reading up about lisianthus - and it was piccolo that we had. It seems that it should have a decent enough vase life but heat does seem to be a major problem. I'm guessing the environment just didn't suit it and the smelly stinking water that was 4 days old proves that.

I felt like saying to her that the water was so stinking that I'm surprised anything was still alive.

Just a shame that the dead lisianthus made her notice a couple of slightly dried out snapdragon flowers and made her think the viburnum was droopy too.

This one tends to be a bit of a winger anyway of course. I just hope that the other houses that have the lisianthus aren't as warm. Oh, and they use their flower food which this one can't have.

Flowerfool I had a similar problem last year on Mother'd Day. I found that most of the water had gone and what was left was warm. It would have been a waste of time giving her the same flowers again in an aqua pack as I was sure that they had died because of mistreatment. The replacement bouquet was of long lasting flowers and foliage. Chrysanths, carnations, sea holly, gerbera and this time I put them in a vase. `

I sent the wife flowers for valentines this year (that was a first!) It was a boxed/aosis arrangement and included pink lilies, cream lisi, pink roses and green santini. We don't have airconditioning yet (don't know why as the wife is office manager for an air conditioning company?) and it was in the high 30's that week (stinking hot). The lisi was still fine after a week, 1 of the roses dropped after a week and the lilies all opened (which is what they are meant to do). So Lisi doesn't seem to have a problem with a warm environment. Bear in mind this was a dry heat, not humid like say Singapore. Of course there are many varieties of Lisi and a long chain of events between being cut and sitting in the consumers house. The problem can be caused at any stage in the supply chain.

I find with lisi that it depends what time of year it is. Sometimes it can last and at other times in the year it tends to be a bit droopy. Noticed this with solidago too, sometimes really good condition and then at other times crap. Prob just wholesaler ripping me off but hey!!!

I notice this with Molucella as well - certain times of the year it's great and others like poo. I used to put it down to warm & damp weather during the summer but got it recently and it went straight into the bin - very weak and seemed quite damp. Now I'm not sure when it is okay to order and when not - I'm pretty sure my wholesaler is sick of me ordering it and then complaining that it isn't good. It's a shame as I love using it.

I try to give my customers a variety of flowers from one time to the next but am finding it quite hard to do this and still feel confident that the flowers are going to last long enough in peoples warm houses for them not to be disappointed. Tropicals are fine and I love the people who want that look but I have an increasing amount of people who want the more cottagy/country styles but still expect them to last 2 weeks in their houses. I'm also getting more and more people telling me they are allergic to lillies. Are there any pretty/country style flowers which are relatively problem free that I am forgetting about ? I find it not so difficult during the winter with waxflower (I love pale pink waxflower & erygium together) and I can use away at hypericum/leucadendron etc but I'm now looking for something less wintery looking. Any ideas ?

Oh, and I went to buy flowers this morning and couldn't bring myself to even look at the lisianthus.

me too with molucella, which i love also incidentally. I find that if you put it in coffin spray for next day it bends in oasis. I think the time depends on the season its supposed to be in maybe?? At the end of the flowers season it starts to be rubbish??? I am not explaining myself very well but i know what i mean.

Lizzy not lasting

Lisianthus seem to be very susceptible to bacteria, so if the vase your customer placed the flowers into had not been bleached after the last use the bacteria would reactivate as soon as the fresh flowers were put into the vase, we have found this a problem in the past. Just a thought.

that sounds very interesting petal, and could be the reason for the demise of some of my lisi. will definately do a bit of a test on that one.

Hi Petal

Thanks for that - it seems a plausible explanation.

As I've said quite a few times, the water was stinking and it really surprised me that it could get so bad in 3 days.

I think I'll have to tell her she's a minger - or maybe not !
