we used to do free delivery within the town. But recently with the fuel prices going up we now charge £3 minimum order £27.50, but we give them the option if they want the £3 included giving them less flowers or added on...usually they go for added on...

oh my god, my minimum order for delivery is £15 - i must change this also. will check out local competition - unfortunately cant differ too much from these but your advice is really welcomed.

Where abouts in the country are you based. i am in widnes in cheshire. there are people with money but then there are people who dont want to spend it also and expect something for nothing.

you make a very good point and as of tomorrow i will be changing a few policies in the shop. thanks very much. i must look really stupid but i really do have quite a good shop, just a bit scared of uppin my prices. i do only put in £15 worth of flowers in a ht in a box.

I dont think you sound stupid at all. I'm a newbie so still learning but I am really trying to get it into my own head that I am there to make money. There is no other trade that doesnt charge for their labour. There is a fair bit of money here and in all fairness i dont think anyone likes spending it but my prices are pretty much the going rate so if they really dont like it they can look elsewhere!

yeah like i said before will just check the local comp before setting anything in stone but you are absolutely right and when it comes to weddings i am not the cheapest in the town but still average at 50 - 60 a year and make a good profit so i dont know why i panic so much over a bloody gift bouquet. i think its cause you do these on mass every day and dont want a bad rep. Thanks for your advice. i feel motivated to get going on new policy tom.

ps how do you get a photo by your name - i am sooooooooooooo crap at doing anything with techno involved...

In my DREAMS. I look at all the magnificent choice around and still have to stick with the really boring xanths, carnations, roses, lilies...... anything more exotic gives my customers a heart attack although I did get quite a few phone orders this MD for more modern flowers so may try to keep a few in for those orders .... I can remember vowing when I was in training never to have xanths in my shop but now guess what! Guess its just the area I am in - very poor people and lots of elderly. But it was my choice so mustn't complain. The only time I get really excited is when I get a bride in who wants something really different!! YEA I have 3 of those before June so can play to my heart's content.

I do think you have to do what suits, at the end of the day it has to sell and you know your own markets.

Erm, am not the best person to explain how to post pics I'm afraid!!

yeah abbi it drives you mad doesnt it. You spend ages with someone trying to convince them that even though they will get less flowers it will look more like a gift they still go for the ht in a box or "one of them you did me last time in a box".

or, you can spend an hour with a bride discussing and looking at loads of really nice pics and then she will still come out with a rose dome. mmmm how original. Luckily i have got quite a few adventurous brides this year so should get some nice pics
