Floristry training

I've been told by a local college that they are no longer offering the national diploma and they are finishing with the certificate course this year because their funding has been cut, so come next academic year they will only be offering short evening courses in 'flower arranging'.

What's going on with floristry training these days, is there really so little interest in it? Are all the colleges getting their funding cut so it's not economic for the smaller ones to run these courses?

I really struggle to find qualified florists, yet there are students posting on here that say they can't get work. Bonkers.

That could possibly be just your local college, maybe they underachieved the year before and the funding people will not keep on throwing money at them if they are not delivering it correctly, maybe not retaining trainees or having them all achieve on time. I worked in training and this was the general rule when funding got cut - could be wrong though - just a thought!

our local college has stopped the same course this year the reason they give is that there is little interest in the course and they have to have a certain no of people to make it viable but as they are charging around £1500.00 per student i can see why

to be honest i would be made up in one way if they stopped training by me as that would mean less people in the town wanting to open a shop!! however, like you say it does mean its more difficult to recruit. I have recently trained my aunty when i needed someone who i could really trust and she is brilliant and is doing bridal bouquets and everything now. I think sometimes if someone has an artistic flair and practical (mad mix) then you could work work with them.

Maybe lantra should focus more on how to help those that have a shop, and want to do their icsf and ndsf ( not sure what they are called now! ), but cant attend college as their nearest one that offers it is about 600 miles away.

I know the college i attented to do my city and guilds didnt offer anything higher than that, as the year before there was no interest.
