this week my gerbera cost me less than my carnations but my carnations are priced at 60p and my gerbera are £1.00. The only reason is that i know my customers would pay more for a gerbera than a carnation, rightly or wrongly the carnation is looked upon as a cheap flower.....I cant see how we as florists can change the way people think

We have picked up this trend a (longggg)while back...it took a bit till the 'younger' ones caught on, but now the carnation isn't looked upon as a funeral flower anymore in our shop! Alot of the 'younger' customers are rather surprised when we have a design in the shop with one of the aforementioned carns, saying they didn't know carns could look so good! We can buy them quite cheap and make them look just as good as an Artemis or a Passion, so why sell them so cheap?! Sure, we have the 'cheapie' ones(usually yellow..ugh!) for Grandma, tied up with a bit of gyp and bärgrass...but Prada sells for 1€ and we had some gorgeous bordeaux ones a few weeks ago, and the customers who bought them are telling me they are still holding up nicely in the arrangement or bq. Hell, we're florists!! We can make a yellow Grandma carnation look like a million bucks if we have to!!![]() Hey apple, how about making up some carns as you would make up a red rose? Or make up a table (if possible in shop????) with some really 'cool' and 'designer' pieces using only carns? This is the way we went when we were introducing the "NEW" carnation! Just a thought...

maybe you have something there maple, there isnt enough room in my shop for the customers never mind a table but maybe I'll do some carnation balls for the window.....not pomanders mind, more like all massed balls
. After saying that tho, i still think it is difficult if not impossible to reverse the thinking of people about carnations, especially little old dears |

limited stock..
Realistically for me,i stock very few carnations(once upon a time i could go through a double case of carnations a week"750-800 of the little columbian darlings")not sure if it was me or just a customer change, but there doesn't seem to be the demand for em anymore(other than peaks i stock maybe 100 a week, tops!!!) they still, even when buying limited quantities(box price was ridiculously cheap)are cheap for me to buy,i dont buy lesser grades"on anything ever" and if its a good price to me and i sell it to my customers(and they keep coming back"most important")....As long as my margins stay steady there willl be no hike in any flowers price...but everything is up for review, should the need arise.
