today after the order had ben cancelled by the 1.20 car florist i tried another and although her prices were reasonable 1.65 for roses and 60p for cars they still wouldnt do a g/w for 25.00 to include the said flowers now i make that 13.50 total with wrap and greenery maybe gyp + delivery that is still a profit.... but i/f charge 24.99 for a h/t of 6 roses was the answer... so im not asking for a h/t just a simple little g/w for an old man to his ladyfriend but after he put up his price to 30.00 that was fine. are we too cheap down here in devon? is it the sea air? after that and a visit from the adams family for a funeral order i have lost faith in humans so i shall hug my ginger pussies and rub the horse!!!! not a good day!!!!!!

This is exactly why I am trying to do the regional pricing project. It may be that you're right for your area but that can't be replicated in other areas in which case you need to know so that you can handle it at the point of sale .. not have to go round the houses and then back to your customer. If you haven't done yours yet PLEASE do, this is exactly the sort of feedback we need.

Recently the carnation has been looked down upon as a "grandma" flower but I think this is just our attitudes rubbing off on the customer. When "modern" arrangements and and modern flowers like Oriental Liliums started coming in 15 or so years ago florists went off the old carns n gyp posies and eventually the customers (younger ones at least) have picked up on that. But now, like some of the others who have posted here, we are seeing what a great flower it is - huge colour variety, long stem, v long vase life. It is up to us to educate the customer about these benefits and to use the humble carnation in a more modern setting (as others have suggested). Here we have trouble selling chrysanths too (customers think they are just cheap daisies that won't last!) but with these and the carns I have been suggesting them to customers whenever I can - pointing out that they last well and are very good value. It is starting to work, I have a few regulars that will now buy them.

poor chrysanth

I think the poor old chrysanth was often seen as a funeral flower, something your old aunty would've had in her cello sheaf on her coffin. Much the same for the carnation....common, cheap and showy.

Joe public likes the difference of exoctics.....you don't normally get them in funeral work, and it's not something Uncle Bert can grow on his allotment.

I'm all for starting a campaign to bring back the car, the xanth and let's not forget the poor old dahlia....the colours and the vase life are superb!
