I had 2 shops at one time ...... it was hard!
If you are prepared to accept that you can't watch over every pot plant and every cut flower you can make it work. You are much more reliant on your staff and you have to have a good team you can trust to have your interests at heart! We used to run all the make up from the bigger shop which was good for stock management but you do always seem to be shuffling stuff around. Like all business decisions there are pros and cons ....... you just have to weigh them all up ...... but staff and over heads are the biggest factors here. Good luck ...... whatever you decide ![]()

I agree with what Treen has said - you really do need to have a strong team in place.
Whilst it would be easier with a partner, I would have thought it would have needed to be someone from the outset rather than someone coming in after you'd had a shop for a couple of years as it's very hard to change and to accept differences in opinion. I could not begin to imagine running two shops as well as having a family with young children and I truly believe it would affect your family life in a big way. Two shops, twice as many problems and you can't be in two places at once. It is definitely doable, but hard work and it depends on the type of person you are and your circumstances. From what I've picked up, you seem the type of person who wants to get involved and know about everything and I personally don't think that is possible when you have more than one shop. If I was you and if your current shop is making a decent profit I wouldn't do anything to rock the boat. Taking on a second shop in a another area will more than likely mean it has to be run differently as every location is completely different so what works for you now may not work somewhere else and you will have to spend a great deal of time and effort there at the outset to get things moving. What would be interesting to know is what your reasons are for wanting a second shop to see where you're coming from.... |

I currently have two shops and it is hard work. The good thing about having two shops is that you can move stock between both easily. We have only one set of books, so your not having to invoice between them both. The downfall side to it is accounting becomes more of a nightmare. We have two lots of good staff who are flexible and they need to be. Another downside to it all this is that we hardly see each other and have even less time for the kids who are nearly 18 and 14. My personal opinion is that I would stick with the one shop. Could you relocate to a bigger premises or extend your existing shop if so that is what i would look at. As others have said have a long think about it. There are more negatives than positives as I see it. Last edited by Solly; 29-04-2008 at 09:06 AM. Reason: Wrong Person |

My reasons are basically i have no space in the shop i am in to do what as in displaying, gettiing in larger weddings expanding if you know what i mean at the mo i just can't take on a large wedding or a funeral contract i have no storage But i am winning customers that do have money to spend which is brill but if they want a large job doing i haven't the space to store work i have to do most of it on site on the day which is more stressful so a bigger shop is what i want BUT i don't want to give this one up!!! I hope that all makes sense you know what i'm like ![]()
