This is a discussion on florist wages within the The Florist Shop forums, part of the Public Forums category; also depends on the area,london rates etc, and i think consideration should be given on how the business is ...

me too redhead and am in the position at the moment not to worry (have no proper staff
![]() ). Pc gone mad world where employer can not give rise to someone who is overperforming because they would have to give the other one as well who could well be under performing. I suppose you could get around it with some kind of bonus structure but how do you put a bonus on just being good at your job??

performance bonus i think you could call it and as wages are a personal matter you dont have to let anyone else know just make sure the recipient knows that it is between you and them and you prefer it that way or promote them to say supervisor with certain responsibilities meaning more wages. it is a touchy subject but as i say its personal between you and your employee

i know what you are saying redhead but the law doesnt agree i dont think. Dont quote me, i would worry that staff would talk cos in places i have worked in the past we have (not florists though). It could cause a lot of bad feeling and unrest unless you changed job description to maybe a senior florist? (just realised you already said that
)

thank you all for your comments. I am the employer, and my florist has worked for me for 18 months straight from college, has had a pay rise a year ago, gets 5 weeks paid holiday, double time for all her overtime, monthly performance bonus, staff meals out 4 times a year, but has asked for more money, shop very quite at mo, but do not want to loose her. she is the only full time florist. i was thinking of putting it up by 25p per hour to 6.25, and then reviewing it in 3 months when shop gets busier, does that seem stingy or am i being fair

i think that seems very fair to be honest with all those other things that you offer Caroline - dont think she would get this treatment everywhere (certainly not at my shop - i could not afford it
). Perhaps you could up her perfomance related pay and that way if the shop takes more then she gets more??

I think you are being very fair as well caroline. For some one straight out of college I assume with not very much actual shop experience. I wasn't on much more than minimum wage when I was newly qualified even though I had two years shop experience from working full time whilst at college.
It might sound harsh, but if the business can't afford it, then you can't afford to give her a rise.

sounds to me as though she has a very good employer five weeks holiday and 4 meals out per year at the moment with the way the financial world is going i would ask her to stay as she is for a while and review it later in the year there are not that many good florist jobs available(in this area anyway) and as you are soooo good to her she might stay and wait..... good luck anyway,it is a difficult subject to discuss
