You could give her a rise level with the rate of inflation. So she would get about 22p more an hour. This would be very fair in the current climate, but then you also have to take into account the increase in the minimum wage in October. Maybe she could have her rise now, but with October in mind. Make it a yearly pay review.

Yes, but then every time she demands a pay rise she'll be getting one if you give her one in this instance. You've already said you're quieter, just explain that to her. Unfortunately many employees just see the till ring and think that you are making loads of money. It's not often they realise how much you have to pay out in overheads.

I totally agree PL many years ago , one of my staff told a customer, on my day off, that i was in town spending money faster than she earns it!! i was fuming when the customer told me what she'd said. What your staff dont see, is when the shop is quiet and you are the one to go WITHOUT wages.They have no idea what goes out in the everyday running of your business. If you cannot afford the pay rise, dont be bullied into it, otherwise you may find yourself in this position every year?
