One of the biggest problems every employer faces eh.
A bit like..how much should i charge for this arrangement....too much and nobody will buy it...too little and i'm out of pocket. It's just the other way around. Only this time, if your employee doesn't 'buy' it...they walk.

So you've got to reach a happy medium...that is, where you're both happy.
How much are they worth? Would you be in trouble if they left? If you give a big raise, will the next raise have to be just as big? Will you upset other staff if they don't earn as much? If you give too much..will they think..that's nice, but if you can afford that much, why didn't you do it months ago!

No easy answer i'm afraid. Sometimes 'little and often' works better, but they won't know how often unless you tell them and may think it's a little raise for the whole year.

wage increase whats one of them

seriously i would say what fly had said and do little and often and watch because of equal opps rules you would prob have to have all people similar quals and experience with similar pay even though we all know that one could be miles better than the other and worth a lot more.

Id base it on 'if they left, what would i offer to get them back' if there worth keeping then i'd up it. Personally, im just turned 20, and id expect £7.25 min! But thats just me personally, florists hard to come by in my area and ppl are desperate! x

Best way to get your wage rate to change, is buy the business, alas the rate usually drops though, and the hours go up,and some weeks you don't have to worry about the hourly rate...you just get appen £50.00 for the week...oh happy days!!!
Sorry if that wasn't much help, but sometimes there just isn't anymore money in the pot!!!
