Do air conditioners work?

We are suffering with the heat in our shop and looking into air cons. Having read they remove moisture and in some cases don't cool the air unless you buy between 6000-8000 btu (dont ask me what that means!) and poke a pipe out the window, we are having second thoughts.

Have also found out through a few other florists that chillers aren't the answer either...anyone out there using an air-conditioner and found their one okay?

Last thing we want is a cold room and dried out flowers...

I have one.... have had for yrs and yrs.... swear by it... have quite a reasonble sized shop and we all have to wear fleeces and body warmers EVEN in this weather

Remember not to direct the blower at the flowers but over the top... warm air rises, cold air fall, least thats what i was told

Every year I have the same thoughts, still haven't got round to getting one. The front of our shop is quite big and not sure if one of these machines will be enough to bring the temperature down a bit and get rid of some of the humidity.

I expect by the end of the week I'll be on the B&Q website again!

I had a large coldroom and never had a problem with anything drying out, so don't believe all that.

Had a wall mounted air con as well like FBA but only used it a few times when it was really hot outside (makes me laugh now that i've just been through a really hot summer! but hey, it's all relative isn't it.

It's all about 'ambience'..if people walk into your shop and it feels hot, they won't really be inclined to splash out...."they'll all be dead in 5 minutes!"

If they feel cool all of a sudden they sort of forget what it's like outside and are a bit more happy about it. So in some ways, it should pay for itself. Never seems like that when you get the elect bill though.

My Brother in law runs his own company cleaning air conditioning systems. Although he doesn't supply them, he has given me some good advice.

He advises that a full air conditioning system is quite an expense and not necessarily the most effective for a shop (he saw the size of ours!). The most effective way is to buy a portable unit from B & Q, Homebase, Focus etc and use that.

He told me that a full a/c system would cost around £15,000!!!!!!!

£15000, sorry but Dont have any idea where he gets his prices from,,, maybe a restaurant or summat, but u would be able to get a good setup for around £2000 (if your shop is small, then a smaller one would do the job.) the B&Q ones could turn up more expensive in the long run,, electricity and replacements due to over use.
