Window Dressing

I know there have been lots of threads on this but i thought i would bring it up again for all the new members and have just realised that Honey was a window dresser in a previous life (kept that well hidden!). Also, Nicola our newbie is a window dresser so thought it may be a good idea to bring it up again.

So has anyone got any ideas themes, general rules to follow about window dressing. For the first couple of years i put loads of effort into the windows and had some nice results but have lost my mojo lately. Really need some inspiration along with pics if poss (will not copy promise just take ideas).

So, if anyone can help with the above pls do and thank you soooo much in advance

Hi everyone,

I'd be happy to offer some window advice. As for lighting, I can only go on what we use in retail so I don't know how they would affect fresh flowers in a window. We use large spotlights for overall light and then small directional halogen spotlights - very hot and bright! But they are great for pointing onto a particular item to highlight and draw attention to it.

As for rules, principles...... I remember having it drummed into us every day at college that you must always start with clean windows and floor as even the best dressed window will be spoilt by not paying attention to the little details! When you are doing a grouping of items to make a display, keep it to a 'pyramid' shape and odd numbers work well. For example, if you had a shelf and wanted to place identical things in a row, it tends to look better if there are 3 or 5 items.
For a pyramid shape, start with the tallest item either in the middle or to one side and then work down on either both sides or on one side to create the shape. It's hard to explain!!

I hope this has made sense and helps a little...

I find that keeping to some basic floristry design rules really helps - things like rule of thirds, visual & physical balance, colour theory etc. If any of you have studied other design based topics (like photography for example) you will find a lot of our design principals are the same.
