This is a discussion on Mega Budget! within the The Florist Shop forums, part of the Public Forums category; I've noticed that actually - there does seem to be a trend of people doing the reception flowers themselves. Had ...

We are out in the sticks and don't have a local wholesaler. Well not a proper one selling nice flowers anyway
Bridezilla's mum is relying on donations from people's gardens and was moaning last week that she thinks all the paeonies will be over (!?). Hahahaha. As we know from experience it inevitably will end in tears and tantrums. |

I love it when people say 'i'll get some greenery out of the garden'.....in the middle of winter......like who do they think they're kidding...like we've never looked ourselves...like they have some secret tropical garden hidden away...why don't they just admit they're too bl##dy tight to buy it!!!!!!

Country estate more like!! I have planted shrubs in my garden that I think would be nice as cut foliage but there is no way on earth, even if I cut the whole thing down, they'd yield enough foliage free of insect damage etc to green all the arrangements for a wedding! Bridezilla's mum is expecting donations of flowers too. Hope they are set up in the marquee when I go to install the cake flowers
I have a girl getting married in August whose father is growing the gladioli for her table centres and pedestals. If - and we think it unlikely given the heatwave we had a few weeks back - they are ready, all together and at precisely the right point for use, they will save her about a fiver per arrangement, so £35 overall. Is it really worth the stress and aggravation?! That particular bride has just taken off all the bridal bouquets and just left us with wired work and table centres as (unbeknown to me) her friend is an ex-competitor of ours who recently sold her shop and is gifting the bouquets to her. Maybe we should start another bridezilla thread! I have a few this year!! |

Yes, I have heard people say the same too. Yes, it is a concern that people might think the thistle in a pot someone else has created is ours, but I also see a lot of lovely brides who really, really want us to do their bouquets and buttonholes so the bridal party has something really special, they are prepared to stretch their budget to fund this and then compromise on the table centres etc. Perhaps I am arrogant enough to assume that people will see the difference in our work, perhaps it flatters my ego that they seek us out for something special, perhaps I am cynical enough to think that they will be so pissed by the time they sit down to eat that they won't notice the difference... Bottom line is I love doing wedding flowers.
We have spent the day today creating flowers for such a lovely bride who is getting married tomorrow. The wedding is miles from the shop and she was on a really tight budget, we just did bridal party and church, not reception. She collected all the flowers this afternoon as there was no time for collection in the morning and we can't deliver it is so far away. Her church arrangements were to be mainly foliage but we managed to stretch the budget to include the same roses as in her bouquet along with some other lovely summer flowers. Her bouquet was a floor length shower, loose and lovely English country garden feel. When she arrived her little face lit up when she saw the flowers, she was so thrilled, a tear came to her eye. When it comes down to it this is why I am a florist. So I guess that makes it an ego thing, eh?! |
