I dont think we have half day closing now, but i think it was tuesday afternoons years ago. Im in a residential area, so town doesn't really affect me too much, it just seems the quietest afternoon by far |

I'm also thinking about closing a day during the week.. have had the shop 3 years now and working 6-7 days a week altho try to close early Sat. Also have wound up with an ulcer, no life and no time any more to work on stained glass. However, IF says they want two months notice if i want to close the shop. It would be nice to have a day off since i usually come in on a Sunday if there are things going out Monday morning by courier. Nightmare.

As far as it goes we close on a Thursday afternoon from 1pm and also on a Saturday at 1pm. We open 9.30am to 4pm the rest of the time. Any hours outside that are a complete waste of time.

Thanks guys. I suppose part of the problem is that i cover such a huge area that some things have to go with the post or courier which means i have to be in the shop at 8 and close at 5 to get stuff ready for next day. Since i pay the mortgage i suppose it's me who owns the shop altho sometimes you wouldn't think so. Am having a serious think about all things IF at the moment, so that's all part of it. When i started closing half day Saturday i got quite a few complaints, usually from the ones that come in to buy a single white lily!!

this is something i've cogitated on many times. i know a few shops near me do close half day but i figured that by being open then i'd cash in on the odd customer - and i know i have, 'cos they tell me!
my shop is open 7 days, 10 -5 mon & tues, [tho i'm usually in at 8.30 and stay till 5.30] wed thurs 9 -5, fri 9 -5.30, sat 9-3 and sunday 11 -2 [the town cemetary is just down the road!] i did think of closing half day tues as it seemed to be the quietest day but recently its become one of the busiest, can't figure out why! & why oh why is it that every time i try to shut up on time i ALWAYS get some one in wanting to spend a decent ammount. If you can get some part time help it might work, even if they are'nt trained you can always leave to-go bouquets, it works ok for me as my customers know when i'm in & not in and know what to expect. i have sat & sunday staff but i do have to be in on sat, i also now have two fabulous ladies who work part time weekday mornings - and am thinking of looking for pm staff later. however the very lovely floristry 'student' [ you know who you are - i see you lurking!!] who works am has agreed [initially anyway!] to work tues afternoons come september so i can have half a day off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yipeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!! so, i suppose it's working out well at the moment. |

Are you the only member covering locations in your area? If so you hold all the cards, so just tell them what your opening arrangements are. You are their customer after all, which is something they have a habit of forgetting.
