Half day closing

Do any of you have half day closing?

My earliest closing day is saturday at 2pm,(we have a footie ground near and nobody can park anywhere) but by the time i actually get home after any deliveries etc its usually past 4pm.

Ive been thinking about closing half days tuesdays, its our quietest day, im doing 6 sometimes 7 days at the minute and finding im getting more and more tired as the months go by but im worried i'll miss a sale.

should i close or do you think it'll put people off using us, ive advertised for someone for the past 3 months and nobody wants to know, had one woman in asking about the vacancy, then when i phoned her to arrange an interview, she'd changed her mind....

its hol season here and tomorrow is my first day that I'll be closing all day on Wednesdays...I figure the world won't end if I am closed a day...pros: -YOU-time to freshen up and maybe get a few things done you normally can't,-saving you money on staff (if you have staff that is!) cons:- you lose a few moolahs...but if its your quietest day isn't it worth it to maybe even get some work done for the shop that will sell better on Thursday or Friday?

Actually I think you answered your own question when you said you are doing 6-7 day weeks...you just CANNOT keep doing this!! I did a year and a half of that and ended up with an ulcer, lost all my friends...except those I can 'talk' to in the middle of the night on the computer and it did a job on my relationship with my bf. Just a thought

hmmmm what a good idea Funky. I am considering closing half day Wednesday, at the moment to catch up on paperwork, but in the future for guaranteed time off like Ellie

Looks like i might start it next week then

As you say Maple, i can get things i cant usually get done. I was out in the garden last night till 9.30, our front garden is an embarrassment, looks like a jungle cos i have no time......ever

I close on a sunday and a monday.

I did this after about 2 months of opening as Monday was a stupidly quiet day. I use the day wisely to get myself straight and caught up with any loose ends, so I am still kinda of working, but not at the shop. I also get the opportunity to catch up with friends and do things I really want to. I feel it makes such a difference to my week. I start off on a tuesday raring to go rather than feeling shattered!

You could always divert your shop phone to your mobile and put a sign on the door to let people know that you are still contactable, so you dont miss any big orders. This is what I do. The calls cost a bit more to be transferred, but I feel its worth it.

That sounds like a good idea!!

We used to only be open Tues-Sat and 9-5, but we started opening on Mondays 'cos we thought we were missing a bit of funeral work (seems like a lot of arrangements are made that day). But Mondays are really quiet and we close at 3 now, we also close at 3 on a Saturday.

Working 6 days a week 50 weeks a year (for nowt!) is getting a bit crap.

I have thought of getting my phone diverted MD but we get so many stupid foreign calls about transferring our gas/phone/electric/insurance, late at night that i'd just get more annoyed. Found this out while working late at the peaks.

garden? jungle? hehe, our neighbours (stooopid sods) called in a week before our hols to ask 'if we would be mowing the lawn anytime soon'?!!!!!!!! I told them that I was packing my suitcase for my 3 weeks away...my 1st hols in THREE YEARS SO NO, I WOULDN'T BE MOWING THE LAWN IN THE NEXT 4 WEEKS....is that a problem? Maybe their 16 year old son has a bit of time on his hands? 8€ to mow the lawn?
