Selling plants....

I sell alot of plants and don't always have the time to gen up on what I've actually bought! Slack I know. I get asked all sorts of questions like are they perennial or what soil do they need etc. Half the time I haven't a clue but will check it out for them but always feel a bit of a dick being caught on the hop. I suppose the simple answer is find out before I put them out for sale but when you have big deliveries they tend to get put straight out. What does everyone else do or am I just a thickie?

i did aload of this sort of thing at college, your best bet is to buy the House Plant Expert by D.G Hession, amazon £7.50 or wh smith do it, its really good, tells you availability care etc

I have a generic answer for most plants that I don't know anything about - don't overwater it, bright light but not direct sunlight and feed it once a month - whether it actually likes that treatment or not they aren't likely to kill it! It's all about being convincing when you blag, you are the expert after all, of course they'll believe you! If you read the labels on them they all say equally vague and generic things too.

Thanks everyone, I've got a couple of the Dr Hessayon books but must invest in the outdoor plants one. I did study plants at college and it was the same old waffle that rosa said, not direct light la la la. I can't remember any of the Latin names now even though they haunted my thoughts for weeks! I caa blag with the best of them but I know naff all about soil and stuff! Its always the oldies that want to know all the details.

i had a man come in the other week asking what this plant was in his families garden..he didn't bring ia bit in, he just expected me to know by his vague description..luckily i did and he went off on happily his way

i agree with rosa general care instructions work well for nearly everything.. except poinsettias and orchids!

and theres not that much that florists sell that HAS to be in special soil

You're right actually. Its the boring old farts with too much time on their hands that ask all the questions. Just had another one ask 'can I eat these capsicums?' I said 'Yes' but what if they burn their mouth or something?! This is the trouble with buyng from the dutch guys, you can't ask too many questions!
