Am doing C & G level 1 and it sounds similar to yours Tree in that its part-time one day a week in the evening, so again doesn't interfer with the day job too much, i can't wait
I really enjoyed level 1 Lylee - am sure you will too. It covered general arrangements - table centres, hand-tied, Advent wreath. Nothing on weddings/funeral work specifically but some of the things we did could be adapted. We had 3 x sessions on design - no flowers involved and had to make up a portfolio of work and a project on 15 flowers/foliage - latin names, vase life etc etc

Hi Rosa alba,

Sorry it took me a while to reply.

Listening to the others I realise that my course is very basic in comparison to C&G. In level 1 we had to put in about 54 hours of course time, and probably 20 or so of our own time to bring our folders up to scratch.

From the top of my head we did practicals on: open wreaths, button holes, baskets, posy pads, oval table arrangements, aqua bouquets, funeral sheifs, hostess bouquets and single flower wraps.

We also did theory on the colour wheel, health and safety, wiring, sundries, flower care, and different types of flower/foliage.

We had to complete a project researching buttonholes, practicing and then producing a final product that was packaged.

Wow, reading all of that back has made me realise there was a fair amount involved!!! I can't wait for level 2 where we will be focusing more on bridal work.

I think the best thing you can do as an employer is check their portfolio, and ask them to make something infront of you. At the end of the day the paper certificate means nothing in comparison to ability/experience.

Decided to resurrect this thread as we "students" must all be started back now and I wondered how the rest of you are getting on. I am due to start my very first night at Level 1 C&G so am excited and petrified in equal amounts!

Hey there. Had my induction on monday it was excellent. Going through all the college forms and safety stuff. Im doing an NCF level 2. I did originally apply for c&g level 1 but that got cancelled this means that all the students that were originally doing level 1 get an extra full day to study. So far Ive learnt how to make a pom pom bow and a simple carnation button-hole and how to wrap it up. Its only a simple thing but it was the first time I'd done anything with wires and the such so I really enjoyed it. I start the course itself on Monday and Im really looking forward to knuckling in. The college itself has a florist that we work in on a rota and we have to try and sort out some work experience for Feb so Ill have to start asking around.

Smile Calling fellow students!

I know some of you may have already read my post in the "Florist Shop" feed (Titled "Help! Dissertation! or something like that!). I'm a 3rd year BA (Hons) Floristry Design student about to start on my final year and Dissertation after this week's "bridging course". Was wondering if I could ask fellow students or anyone out there to perhaps drop a comment or two on there about my topic on environment and floristry trade, it would be greatly appreciated!! Would also be more than happy to do the same for you if you need any info, input or help for your courses too.

Good Luck to all of you returning to your courses I really hope all goes well for you!

Georgian Design

Frizzytwig hi just scrolling through and maybe I can help. I did my project on Georgian as well - its to give you a look into the mindset of people and helps you believe it or not in level 3 as you will have to do a lot of stuff "in the style of" - we had to do 3 large designs in the Georgian style which is great practice for church weddings etc. Stick with it Suggest you go to the website (I presume they have one) for the national trust property Saltram House in Plymouth - I got a lot of great info there.

Good luck

Hi everyone,

My NCFE creative craft in floristry level 2 starts up again tonight. We registered last week and were told that it might be cancelled if we don't meet the required numbers! Keep your fingers crossed for me, otherwise I might not have much to say on here!

Hey Frizzytwig...you may want to also have a look at the florist George Smith...he has a particularly antique style which may help.

Have a quick peek at this site which shows just a little of his work...

yeah thats why my course was cancelled. Not because level 1 didnt reach the number requirements but the level 2 course didnt and because they didnt want to let there old students down they combined the 2. I dont mind its just gonna be harder work for a complete beginner like myself.

Many thanks Chris & Abi, will certainly have a look at the infor you gave me. Have ponced around the Geffrye & V&A museums, bought loads of postcards etc. My tutor wants wallpaper and fabric samples, colours, flower containers etc for the baroque, rococo and neo classical periods. Have found some stuff for this but it is tough going. I think perhaps I read too much into an assignment sometimes and make it bigger in myhead than it actually is.
