It's great to know that the 'real' florists value college tuition.

My tutor is really great. she is friendly and relaxed, demos everything and lets us ask questions as she is going, and is able to get on with everyone. One of the other girls said that her friend took the same course with a different tutor who was so awful the girl quit. After that we campaigned to get our tutor back again for the level 2 and we won!

Its amazing at the variation in tutors isn't it. The very 1st class (one day flower arranging) I went to was taught by a real old flower arranging dragon - if I'd been younger, probably would have been s**t scared of her and given up there and then. One of the things we learnt was tulips in a wallpaper cone - nice! I can remember stressing about where to get offcuts of wallpaper

The Witch I referred to in earlier post was almost as bad, but at least she was a florist with many years experience - she just couldn't teach. Thankfully, got the one I have now who's fantastic.

My tutor is the same as last year and she is great, I'm back on 25th and first lesson is to make an Edwardian posy. This site is great isn't it, so much encouragement from everyone.

Just completed my first night and a mix of people from younsters in their 20's to older birds like me and some trainee florists from shops who want to come at night rather than waste daylight hours! No floristry hands on yet just discussing projects etc. First one is to be on current trends for this time of year, have to collect info to write about product offered by some firms M&S, IF etc and comment on what we like and why, value for money etc So all gripping stuff so far First bit of actual hands on floristry won't be for another two weeks or so.

I'm going to be doing current trends too Lylee - don't know if this is instead of or as well as historical (victorian/georgian) like Bel and Frizzy.

I have to admit I love college. This degree has really taught me a lot. Although there is a lot of academic content, there is also a great variety of practical modules to be completed. The course seems to be getting more popular with each year that passes, 14 new ones in this year at the end of September (after the numbers being capped at 14 per year as the department is only small and only 1 floristry techniques lecturer between the 3 years of the BA (Hons)!) 2nd year has 18 on it and my poor year is now down to just 5 of us. Unfortunately one of my collegues dropped out on Thursday during our bridging course before our 3rd year begins next Friday. I was quite sad to see her go as we have been together as a small group for 2 years now, but completing a dissertation and organising a wedding fair etc as just PART of the final year is not for everyone.
On a lighter note though I have to say our tutor is excellent. She's very nice and is supportive of what we wish to do. It also been facinating chatting to her about some celebrity weddings she has been involved with. I think the best thing though is that she tends to treat us more like collegues than students. It also helps that the majority of us on the course are mature students, so it does tend to help our relationship with the tutor and I believe has gone some way towards her allowing us to be more creative finding our own individual strengths.

I loved my time at college,,it was bloody years ago now though!! My old tutor is still there and my new girl was taught by her and my student for this coming year has just started and she's got her too!! I used to worship her and watch agog as she created all these wonderful things,,I never thought I would ever ever be able to do what she did,,but hey guess what,,I can!!

I couldn't ever teach though..have so not got the patience,,I'd show you once and expect you to be perfect! You would all hate me so much. I have the patience of a gnat.
