Would probably think he was nuts!! Changing from a career that could earn him over £80k a year to one where you get paid pittance. However in both careers you still get verbally abused by your clients!!

Saw your note tree and you sound like your in a similar situation to me.
Just wondered whether you have a plan to get from where you are... to your end game. I currently have a sensible day job where I do a full week's work over 4 days. I am at college one day a week improving my skills. I'm doing my first tiny wedding in April (and am terrified). I need to get some more work experience but am not sure where I can find the hours in the day to do it.

I just can't see how I can afford to eat and continue with my dream... Its difficult going from a sensible job that's ok but pays the mortgage to something that you would love doing every day.

Cool

I did the same as you and now have a successful shop which has been open for 3 years. I do agree with everything negative said and you too will be saying these things after a couple of years!! However, we must love it as we are all still here emailing after hours about our job!! The customers do your head in, you dont really get to play with any new designs as everyone wants handtieds, its cold etc etc but good luck with it anyway. Have a look around your area - if you are littered with florists then a new one will prob not work that much but if you see a space then go for it!!

I am just about to complete my BA (Hons) in Floristry Design and my family already have a long established business. I think what people here are trying to get accross to you is the sheer determination and passion for the job that keeps us doing what we do despite of all the crappy bits!!

You really have to be very sure you want to go into this line of work. As has already been mentionned it would be very prudent for you to perhaps volunteer at a local florist shop (weekends in particular) to see exactly what goes on. I suggest weekends as generally they are the hardest. If you find you survive this and still come out the other end enjoying the time you have spent then go for it!!
Thats intresting with there only being one other male with lots of ladies in our shop, sometimes I feel like I am a clinical psychologist some days

Hi Lily, its a tough one giving up a well paid job to move into floristry; but lots have done it and have never looked back. Its all about timing in my mind. Being absolutely sure you have (one has) enough skill, creativity and experience to make it work. Have you tried to get any Saturday work in a florist? Its hard for me at the moment as my course is on a Saturday - but that's the next step in my plan when I finish in July.

Could you reduce your 'sensible' job to 3 or 4 days a week and work in a Florist another 2?

I'll PM you with some other thoughts.

Thanks tulip.... There's quite a few florists around me ... They are good too. I've seen a few others come and go. I'm in Berkshire and the shop rents are scarily high.
