de-thorn or not

Hello all,
A quick question if anyone has an answer I have taken on a trainee just last week and she was conditioning roses for me and she mentioned that at the training course that she just completed the tutor said not to de-thorn the roses that its no longer a practice, (i'm aware of baceteria and all that) and i believe that is the reason not to de-thorn but. Where do we stand with insurance if a customer gets hurt by a thorn???? Any ideas anyone..

Look at it this way..if a customer bought a craft knife off you...and then slashed her wrists...would you feel responsible?

I think it's reasonable to assume that most people will be aware of the danger of thorns on roses and will take precautions.

Personally, i think they look better with the thorns on, a bit more as nature intended. I would only ever strip the bottom ones to make handling easier and they don't show anyway.

As to the entry of bacteria, yes it's a valid argument but i think the jury is still out on that one. It's quite likely that the roses will be past their best before the little darlings can wreak havoc. If the water is kept reasonably clean it shouldn't be too much of a problem

We use either one of those yellow flower shaped rubber stripper thingys (think Fly put a pic in gallery) or a tough old gardening glove to strip stems, it doesn't de-thorn as such but it takes the points off without damaging the stems.

i always use a yellow flower thingy, not only does it only take the tips off the thorns but damages the stem less as well. wouldn't use a metal stripper again
