I know just what you mean MD. When i watched a student doing just that about a year ago i found myself looking at my watch. Ok, it was nicely done, but when you have people queuing out the door you just can't afford to spend that much time titivating. It almost looks like you're trying to justify an extra tenner by spending extra time on it. It just doesn't work these days.

With time and experience comes accuracy and perfection with the speed. This is something college cannot teach....

I left paid job to go to college at 28 ish. Think i really had the customer service skills and other stuff already from the range of jobs which i had done and hated. I kinda think the same as the others, a bit of both does you the world of good. Think you do need to master what you are making before the speed comes but it does come!! You do learn the correct way of doing something and then its just like anything else, once you are qualified you do it the way you like to but at least you know the other way. Also, you get the benefit usually of meeting a few tutors at college with different ideas and possibly in a shop you may get just one persons idea and you are paid to do it her or his way which is fine for that shop but then you may want to move on. god i use 100 words when 10 will do - sorry!!!

Many complain about the amount of theory /paperwork you have to complete and you do not appear to get a lot of 'hands on' practise.

I was an apprentice for 3 years in a shop and learnt everything needed to run the business. College was not an option to most trainees.

Do you get a qualification that will ensure you more money or better prospects when you leave.

Does anyone know the ratio of college students to shop trainees?

Sorry if my questions are intrusive, I'm just curious.
I do college 1 day a week and a shop 1 day a week for some hands on experience as i feel i dont get enough hands on with college. There is a lot of coursework and sometimes i wonder what i will ever need some of it for although im sure it will become apparent one day

Some of the course work you will never need, some you think you would never need but came in handy, and some essential for the job. It really depend on your situation but ideally, in my opinion, a combination of the two is best, shop and college. While at college, if you can do work experience in a few florists, the more the merrier, the more florists you work in the more wide exerience you'll have on different aspects of floristry, as every florist is different. What the students have to take from this is what works for them and create their own style, with a bit of everybody in, if that makes sense

Apple has a good point here, if you can gain experience from several different florist shops, see what works for them and how they all work. Each and every florist is different and all have strengths and weaknesses, this will all help build upon your own individual skills.

I heard on the radio 'other week of a girl aged 19 setting up her own florist shop, think she had done a apprentice in a florist and gone to college to study business on an evening, she sounded very confident and I thought good on her but how scary esp at 19!

well I hope she doesnt fall flat on her face, its good that she is confident but if shes only been a junior for a couple of years for 1 florist then I would have said get more experience before going it alone. Saying that I do think there are advantages of being young, she probably doesnt have any ties, children, husband, house etc. so can dedicate all her time in making it work. Shes done it now so good luck to her

I find the young are very confident now not afraid of big debts and don't seem to worry about what is ahead
