12 of us started level 2 C & G in September - I reckon we'll finish with 8. Of the 4 that have gone or are going:
1 left to get a full time job in a florist 1 couldn't cope with the paperwork and got a job in supermarket (her granddad owned a florist nearby, he's retired and the shop is sitting empty!) 1 has missed loads and failed her 1st assessment and the last one suffers from depression and getting the portfolio together was too much for her - she also failed the 1st assessment I'd feel really p'd off if everyone passed without doing the required amount of work; the qualification just wouldn't be credible

I done the btec NDF many moons ago and I do think that everyone has to pass it. There was one girl who just couldnt do the assignment work, although she did try, the tutors had meetings with her and her parents a few times to try and get her to drop down to the certificate instead. Eventually she did do this because they just told her that there isnt any way she would pass and her time in college would have been for nothing if she didnt drop down.

Some secondary schools now offer floristry taster courses and other vocational short courses, though they seem to be aimed at the ones who aren't going to college after school
![]() I've had a couple come looking for jobs that have made one buttonhole and the like and expect me to give them a job as a florist. But at least it's a step in the right direction for getting young people interested.

I have always loved plants and flowers and was encouraged at home, learning latin names, gardening etc. I think kids don't get the encouragement and interest shown in them that they used to. Our family is close (meals together, local productions together...bit Von Trapp but hey! we love each other) and our parents are always so encouraging and supportive. I think this is a big part of an increasing cultural problem.

jake that was the reason i took on floristry because i love flowers and plants and tried to get on a course for ages and got refused because i didnt work in a florists but i am sooo happy
that ive done it and i still want to find out more and take more courses(if i can find some that appeal to me)i think i am the only one off the course working in floristry(one lady was going to do her own thing but havent heard anything from her) we are not the only ones with a trained staff deficit we cant find good workers on the farm either, staff yes, but not trained or even worked with piggies and not willing to train ![]() |
