12 of us started level 2 C & G in September - I reckon we'll finish with 8. Of the 4 that have gone or are going:

1 left to get a full time job in a florist
1 couldn't cope with the paperwork and got a job in supermarket (her granddad owned a florist nearby, he's retired and the shop is sitting empty!)
1 has missed loads and failed her 1st assessment
and the last one suffers from depression and getting the portfolio together was too much for her - she also failed the 1st assessment

I'd feel really p'd off if everyone passed without doing the required amount of work; the qualification just wouldn't be credible

Our numbers are great compared to that, must be our lovely tutors

We started with 18, one dropped out early on due to a car accident and two are losing interest of late. One of them has said she'll finish it, the other just hasn't turned up for weeks.

A lot of us are wanting to go on to level 3 too. It's nice to have a big, keen group but there will be a glut of us looking for work at some point

I done the btec NDF many moons ago and I do think that everyone has to pass it. There was one girl who just couldnt do the assignment work, although she did try, the tutors had meetings with her and her parents a few times to try and get her to drop down to the certificate instead. Eventually she did do this because they just told her that there isnt any way she would pass and her time in college would have been for nothing if she didnt drop down.

Some secondary schools now offer floristry taster courses and other vocational short courses, though they seem to be aimed at the ones who aren't going to college after school

I've had a couple come looking for jobs that have made one buttonhole and the like and expect me to give them a job as a florist. But at least it's a step in the right direction for getting young people interested.

When I did btec ndf there was a older lady on the course who refused to do the funeral module both years, her hubby had recently died and she said it upset her too much she passed and got the most improved student award at the end of the second year, there were also a few others who got nannied through so everyone passed

About 15 of us finished the course, two of us have shops now, one other works in a shop, another kitchen sinks funerals and none of the rest have anything to do with floristry at all. It's a sad fact that this is a necessary evil to keep the courses running. In my area floristry courses are dwindling and it's a constant struggle for me to find good qualified florists.

I have a young florist fresh out of college and she says it was the same when she was at college too, lots of older ladies just doing it for something to do to get out of the house. It is a real problem I think, that younguns don't see floristry as a viable career option. Why is that? I'm not sure that changing the way the training is offered is the solution, the challenge is to get kids interested in floristry at all in the first place.
I think many don't see it as a viable career option because it doesn't seem particularly lucrative. I am pursuing a career in this field because I have a passion for it, not cause I want to be a millionaire. Others on my course (mostly younger than me) aren't particulalry considering a career in floristry; one is going for an electrician's apprenticeship, another vetinary stuff etc. I can't understand why young people would take a course like this if they weren't considering a career in floristry, it's so specific!

I have always loved plants and flowers and was encouraged at home, learning latin names, gardening etc. I think kids don't get the encouragement and interest shown in them that they used to. Our family is close (meals together, local productions together...bit Von Trapp but hey! we love each other) and our parents are always so encouraging and supportive. I think this is a big part of an increasing cultural problem.

jake that was the reason i took on floristry because i love flowers and plants and tried to get on a course for ages and got refused because i didnt work in a florists but i am sooo happy that ive done it and i still want to find out more and take more courses(if i can find some that appeal to me)
i think i am the only one off the course working in floristry(one lady was going to do her own thing but havent heard anything from her) we are not the only ones with a trained staff deficit we cant find good workers on the farm either, staff yes, but not trained or even worked with piggies and not willing to train
