((will deff hold off on the maple...can't stand the sight of blood! ))As far as the hazelnut goes its a 'look nice' tree, meaning the lady doesn't give a hoot about how many nuts she actually gets!! I was thinking of giving it a REALLY good prune, leaving just a few 'scaffold' branches and removing almost all of the other limbs...kinda making it a 'bonsai' nut tree?! D'you think it would work? Its about 2-2,5m tall and has about 7 or 8 of the 'scaffolds'. Also, the Taxus that we re-planted in the fall , out of the whole lot only 3 are looking like they made it through the winter! Those 3 have nice new shoots(?right term) and the other look like they are just existing..some of them are already crunchy! One more brain picker Brian!! A friend has a euonymus (the yellow/green bushy kind-sorry, don't know the name!) in garden and wants to throw it out. We've decided to try and re-plant it in our 'foliage-for-florists' garden, anything in particular we need to do? We have quite a few of them already and they seem to love our soil so thats not a problem. It has though already started sprouting nice new leaves, but they want it out next week.

euonymus 'fortunei' (sun spot) If it's going to survive then now is the right time to do it, (but not if the ground is too cold!) they like full to partial sun, this particular type prefers sun to shade. prefers moist, well drained soil and are urban tolerant. take as big a root ball as possible and add some peat free compost. water in well and say a little prayer!
Well done for saving it, i hate seeing good plants go to waste. hope this helps. Bryan. |

And I know what ya mean about plant-saving!! A garden-landscaping company I work with often has a piece of land just outside of town where they pile up all their 'garbage'...I'm there once a week to have a nose around! It is absolutely amazing what I found there!!! My aforementioned 'foliage-for-florists' garden at home has been mostly funded by taking plants, shrubs, trees and whatever else I can lay my hands on home!!! Just last week I saved TONS of ivy from a premature death!!! All the guys know I'm there often to look and they set aside the stuff they think I might want...I think I have about 40 box bushes floating around!! (great for cutting for bqs! )

I'd like to just share my own little piece of gardening excitement.
This year my wisteria floribunda is flowering for the first time. I planted 6 years ago and text book pruned it religiously for 3 years, not a sausage, 2 years ago just ignored it and last year hacked it right back. Et voila, blooms aplenty .My fargesia murieliae bamboo is flowering too. This I am not so ecstatic about. |

Viola and Viola Cornuta, we sell em by the ton!! Folks start planting them now and they do flower a long time, but here folks usually take them out once its Geranium etc time. I usually leave them in and they bloom sometimes more, sometimes less all summer inīto the fall. I have noticed though that if you remove dead flowers and leaves that they last longer (and nicer!). I LOVE V. Cornuta! I put them into hanging pots and let them grow and grow...last year I got them as long as 1 meter and they flowered well into August!
